They make great pets. A very interesting animal and easily tamed. Not real bright though.

We now see quite a lot of them in central Kansas so you can expect to see more of them in the future as they adapt to the different clime.

A couple of years ago while working along a county road I noticed an armadillo that was a road kill. I had never seen one up close so stopped for a look. Couldn't see a scratch on the critter so maybe it died of heart failure as a car came barreling at it.

Anyway I sure longed for a nail gun. If I would have had one I would have fastened said armadillo to the side of a tree or utility pole to make it appear as if it would climbing. Bet that sight would have gotten some looks.

I have to ask... when you say dig holes do you mean that they dig and have tunnels underground like a mole? Dens and such? We have lived here for a little over 5 years and have seen them dead on the road and a few live ones here and there but, this year I have noticed large sink holes appearing in my yard plus dirt raised up like tunnels underneath the ground. They look way to big to be moles even though I know moles acn do tons of damage. But, the other night I saw an armadillo running across the yard when we came home late. Could these underground tunnels and dens be from an armadillo or a huge mole? Please help... if it is how do we get rid of it or them? the other day I was walking out back to hang out the sheets on the line and my foot went through the ground to me knee. Freaked me out so bad, I was going nuts thinking about what was in that hole waiting for me to fall in! thank goodness I didn't break anything.

Actually a lot of armadillos you see dead in the road don't actually get ran over. If startled, they'll jump. If the car tires straddle them, they'll jump up and kill themselves by hitting underneath the car.

Catch the darn things and eat them, they're actually pretty good. Just another part of homesteading. Use what is available. Will cut down on your food bill...

There is a surprising amount of meat on an armadillo and it tastes much better than many other game animals.

Armadillos don't dig deep holes for food just a bunch of shallow 2-3" for grubs and insects..They can destroy a flower bed/garden real quick......I would say 75% of the dead ones I see on the road are upside down with their little legs sticking straight up but obviously not hit/run over....I'll buy the jumping and hitting bottom of car theory..

Armadillos live in a hole in the ground. With their armor and compact heavy bodies they can absord quite a bit and not show much damage.

Just make sure you cook them well. That whole armadillo/leprosy thing would give me the heebie-jeebies. Blech.

And when you finish eating, you can make a hat out of the shell.

All kinds of good uses...

Would make a good purse also. You would be the first person on your block (probably the county and maybe the whole state) to have a nine (9) banded purse.. ..
