The filter is FILTHY every time I pull it out of there, so it's not on bypass. I suppose we have enough sediment that I should be changing the filter every couple of weeks. The string filters are pretty economical, so I think I'll start changing them more often. I used to buy those carbon filters, but those got way too expensive.

For the rotten egg smelling problem you need to research Sulfate Reducing Bacteria. The entire water system including the well needs to be shock treated and you need to calculate the volume of water in everything, well, water storage tank, plumbing, water heater, etc. and treat accordingly and not by guess. Remove the anode from the water heater also.

We just shocked our well with bleach, following instructions on the internet. It worked like a charm!

ok, we drained the hot water heater - the water looked clean, no sediment even. But - it worked. No more smell!

What Agmantoo told you is correct. But if you want to eliminate the problem permanently, you need to remove the anode rod from the water heater. The rod is rotted and that's why your dh smells it in the hot water. I am a master plumber with my own company for over 20 years. This is the first thing I do when a customer has a complaint like yours.

sulfur water seems to be a big problem for wells here in Fl. usually a rainsoft type water softener system helps but sometimes even then you just cant get rid of it. I lived in a place once that had that rotten egg smell in the water, I mean it was strong...you would take a shower and feel worse after you got out than before you went in.

I learned from that experience thats the first thing i check when i look at a house with a well, i'll go and crank the hot water on in a few faucets and wait to see if the smell starts creeping in .
