I have to tell this story: A few years ago we were staying at a lovely little cottage in Laguna Beach, very charming, very expensive, etc. The owners had given us special permission to bring our dog as he was so well trained and clean. He got out one evening and took a full on hit from a skunk (who knew there were skunks in Laguna Beach!!). Anyway, I called a local vet who advised us to put vaseline around his eyes to protect them and bathe him with vinegar douches, tomato juice or a mixture of dishwashing liquid and something else (can't remember). We put the dog on the private enclosed patio and I sent my DH out to the all night grocery to get supplies. He came home with the largest jar of vaseline I've ever seen, industrial sized and all the other stuff, as well as a 6 pack of beer to fortify us. We did all three things the vet suggested and it worked beautifully. Next morning we heard someone out on the patio, and my husband went out there to find the meter man who looked at him VERY strangely. When he left, I realized why: Lying out there on the patio, was this HUGE vaseline jar, empty beer bottles, a case of empty Summers Eve douche bottles scattered around, and tomato juice stained beach towels. I'm surprised the man didn't call the police. I guess it's just par for the course in Southern Cal!

You use acids to break down the musk, so adding baking soda to tom sauce or vinegar is rather defeating the purpose. Acetic acid works the best and is the major ingredient in skunk odor removers. Its also the acid in vinegar. The douches that work are vinegar douches. In the Air Force we kept vinegar douches on hand for the patrol dogs. It was easy to store, had a long shelf life, and was easier to find than acetic acid.

Ahhhh...the memories!
One February night, Roger went out to fill the outdoor boiler furnace with Goldie our dog. Goldie just wanted to say hello to this black-and-white "kitty" and got it in the face and chest. Roger didn't notice it until he got to the house and near the dog. Golde got into the house and Roger must have walked in some of the drippings. Realize, at that time we had no flooring, just plywood down. What a mess.
We've since learned to keep large bottles of hydrogen peroxide and vinegar handy. I just put Biz on my shopping list. Can't hurt!

Then it hit me WHOAAAAAAA HOLY GUACAMOLE. It smelled like skunk and burnt tires all mixed together. I got her out immediately and put vicks under my nose, opened all the windows, lit incense and it still stinks to high heaven in here.
Ok so now I'm off to bathe her. I looked up skunk and dog and found a recipe requiring 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide. There is no where for me to get that. I have a few cans of tomato sauce, i have a small bottle of peroxide, i do have a giant box of baking soda. So what proportions would I mix of all this stuff and any suggestions on getting the smell out of the house? it's in every corner.

My dog has been sprayed a couple of time. ( stupid is stupid does!) and I use Massengal Douche. Typically two bottles works good enough to allow him in the house as soon as he is towel dryed! tomatoe sauce has not worked for me.
good luck!

I've heard douche works but have never tried it. As an alternative to the Biz and Simple Green you might try pineapple juice. It contains bromelain, an enzyme that breaks down protein (like Biz).
Jim, my DH had a similar experience the day after the big stink. Everyone kept walking by his desk making faces. By the time he had gotten home I had concocted the B&G solution and we took care of his coat toot sweet. I will NEVER be without that combo. BTW it works well on cat dander/saliva if you have someone who's allergic.

Ditto. Nothing works. Been there twice. Chuck the dog outside for the next six weeks and leave it out there. Hope and pray it's learned it's lesson. If not, leave it outside for another six weeks after it gets sprayed again.

A good cover up is take a bottle of vinegar douche and 1 ounce of pure cooking vanilla, put on the stinky areas(if you can't smell the skunck clean your nose out by smelling coffee) and let dry. It will dry sticky so don't worry about that. You can use more if you need to just follow the percentages. If you need to you can make your own vinegar solution make about a 10% vinegar to water as you will be leaving it on the fur.

Honestly - Skunk Off! It's inexpensive and easy. Spray it on, rub it in, done. Repeat if necessary. Seb was sprayed yesterday morning. He was back in the house in the afternoon.

well the weather is nice enough I left the windows open all night. I had some ozium from when I lived in the dog pee rent house for 2 months and used that on the carpet (forgot I had it and found it under the sink). I cut some of the hair off from under her jaw which is where she was sprayed and I may cut some more today. I needed to do that anyway because that's the hardest place to get the burs off after she runs through the tall brush.
I might run into town and see if the hardware store has skunk off. But she smells a good 70% better than she did yesterday morn!

My youngest springer got sprayed twice on November 5th, two years to the day!! The first time I used everything tomato juice, vinegar, douche, peroxide, skunk away etc. The garage smelled for months and the dog, while she smelled good most of the time, when it was wet or she layed right on me, I could smell her for almost a year. The second time, I used the Mythbuster remedy which is baking soda, peroxide & dish detergent mixed together with NO water and it worked! I got lots of deodorizer thingies for the house (she was ONLY in the garage for a day) and I didn't smell much at all after a day or two. The dog didn't smell much at all and I had no 6 months to a year of after smell. The dog will never go out without a leash on November 5th again, but at least I know what to use if it happens again!
