I like Maine.
This is my backyard in Maine
And just a bit further:
And then there is the fact that we have low taxes.
We have low land prices.
We can get by okay with a low cost-of-living.
January, February, and March are cool, but it is well worth it.

You said it all! Exactly why we are getting out! and don't even get me started with the school/teachers down here. If school doesn't work out in Maine I can honestly say I will homeschool and Maine won't try to arrest me LOL

Do look int the school redistricting that's coming up, though. It is going to hit northern Maine hard. Here's a link for some articles on it. It makes homeschooling look better and better (says me who knows she lacks the aptitude for it!)

Threads like this really make me miss Maine. Lived in New Sweden a couple years when I was a kid. Dad is from Limestone. Darned near killed him being away from home all the years he was in the Navy.
Nice pics ET1. Side note for ya... Every time I see you post some where I think of my dad. He was also an ET.

I spent a lot of time underwater, so I could get my pension and enjoy life now in Maine.
Is your dad in the VFW?
Are you in the VFW auxiliary?

We had even entertained the thought of moving to Maine at one time, and like all other states it has its pros and cons...we were looking at Lewiston/Auburn area, and also Mexico, Maine. Nice state to be moivng to (we love the snow!)--wish you nothing but the best of luck with your move

We are a homeschool family! The schools in my town are so bad I never get questioned! We would homeschool no matter what but they are more laid back in ME than MA.

Redistricting isn't going to change where any of the kids in our district go to school but it's going to create a bigger expense in our budget. It costs our town $4,000 a year for all of our administrative costs including my $250 a year chairman's stipend. I don't see how it's going to stay this low when this mess is done. Something needed to be done but what the governor wants and how quickly he wants it isn't the answer.

Flatlanders ain't the only thing we call people from Mass, but I can't mention the other name here Don't see that you'll notice much difference down in that part of the state though, anything below Bangor is just an extension of Mass.

We just moved to AR from Fort Fairfield. I thought I'd never say this, but I miss MAINE! I loved the country living. People don't get in your business up the northern part. The cold I wont miss, but just @ everything else I do.

LOL!! I'm a Vermonter as well, but since my parents moved me to Maine for 5 years, and I lived in MD and ME for another 5+ years, I'm no longer a true Vermonter - and my family goes 10 generations back. Heck, my ancestors helped found the state. Kingsland Bay on Lake Champlain is named after my great (6x back) grandfather.

We did it!! We finally got to Maine!!
Just in time for it to snow I was hoping to be able to get a few herbs in the ground before snow flew...but no such luck But we are now here and trying to settle in.
Between homeowners insurance companies not liking rabbits or chickens..It's been nothing but interesting. They seem to not care for houses on blocks with just crawl space either *sigh* We are hoping to eventually find one that will except us as we are and not jack the price when they see we have animals...I honestly don't understand the problem of animals. *sigh*
Other then that I am trying to find my way around (not overly sucessfully I might add) and get things moved in. The snow has thrown a wrench in our moving things in and planting things. I am afraid I will lose my herbs I brought with me and I am sure more thing will go wrong before we are done. Tonight we are attmepting to move the woodstove in the house. It;s from our old house and it has a catalist in it. I am going to attempt to vacuum it and see if I can't get it unpluged *sigh* It wasn't plugged until we moved it and then everything must have jostled loose.
Any suggestions for things for us to do to get settled in before the real snow and ice hit?

Marsh-
Welcome to Maine.
I have never heard of having problems like that with rabbits and chickens.
I have three dozen chickens; a neighbor has chickens and rabbits. We both raise goats.
I do not understand why any insurance company would care about your animals??
We keep a few herbs in the windows and as hanging plants. Though ours usually die in the winter.
Good luck.

Congratulations on your move! We've been looking at Maine as a place to retire to, so I'm looking forward to reading your posts about your experiences up there.
I'm with ET1... what's the insurance companies' hesitation about rabbits and chickens? I've heard they can be picky about certain dog breeds.

This ins. thing is odd.....our camp is on beams and blocks and we have ins. no trouble!
And critters....at home 16goats 50 various birds 2 calves....bunnies and pigs from time to time.
Hope your chimney is lined and clean or triple wall pipe and properly installed (this is the *one* thing our ins. gave us trouble about) Dont burn green wood.
I personally dont like anything South of Augusta but....I prefer unorganized TWP's for lower taxes....Windham is high tax area.
goatmarm (forum name) is in your area if you are wanting goats. I have a registered Nubian buck from her stock that is a very good boy. She has children in 4H as well.
My family is good Maine stock.....if you last thru one winter and Spring you might stay.
