Excellent mower that was designed to work behind a Ford N/NAA/Hundred Series tractors. They can be a bear to set up, but, once you get them "tuned in" they work like a dream. GET A MANUAL. Take a look at this site and ask questions - ntractorclub.com .

Another question pertaining to the same.
Would a brush hog cut/mulch hay too much to be able to rake and then bale?
I need information on what adjustments should be checked and how to make them.
Do I need to take the blades/cutter heads off to sharpen them?
Again thnaks as so far the info has been most helpful.

Could you mention the place you got an on-line manual? You can PM me if you want.....

The manual should go through most of the setup.

Depending what you cut, often under-serated sickles are the best, or smooth sickles. If yours has top serated, it can clog up on fine stemmed hay. You can sharpen smooth or bottom setrated sickles. Their are special stones, big V shape, for this. Keep the edge cool, if it gets hot the temper goes out & goes dull quickly.

A sickle bar works like a sissors, many forget the ledger plates on the sickle guards need to be sharp/ replaced as well from time to time - the other 1/2 of the 'sissors action'.. Most often they are lightly serated on a 501. They should have a sharp edge, not rounded at all.

You can loosen the 3 big bolts that hold the bar on & pivot the sickle up or down, it will cut shorter or skip over rocks better, depending on what you want to do.

If the belt is poor, you need to measure the 2 pullies it runs on. thewre were 3 different sets of pullies with different belts, serial # won't help, need to know the diameters to get a new belt.

Some brush hogs have the side pannel that unbolts; I've heard of people using these to make hay. Without taking a side off, you don't get much useable hay from one.
