CG1,

I think if you could control the filamentous algae (moss) those nutrients would probably go into shrimp. Slices of straw bales placed every 25' around the edge of the pond would help. The moss is what is keeping your pond water clear so once it's gone your water will turn green.

In my ponds with moss problems I've recorded pH spiking at over 10 in the afternoon when the algae consumes all the CO2.

Fishhead, if there were more moss, I would worry about it. They need the cover more than anything. It's worked for 5 years, I'm not going to change anything now.

Cowgirlone,

Thanks so much for the additional info and the photo. I think it was very clever of you to even think of trying the shrimp....congrats on your success!

We have a pond that's probably about the same size. Was originally put in for livestock and is fed by a spring. But it's been stocked - which we enjoy, of course. So looks like it's new pond construction if we want to make a go at it. Sounds like harvesting would be much easier that way too.

There's probably at least a couple sources for juveniles in the state (NC). I'll look around.

Thanks again for sharing....Kim

You're sure welcome Kim, and thank you.
I bet you can find some juveniles closer.
Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Can you put the prawns in with your other fish, or will they end up being fish food?

It depends on the size of the fish and size of the shrimp but they would probably get eaten.

I like the idea of home grown shrimp. I wonder if it would work in an above ground pool?
