Gonna cost you 5 to 10 percent more to heat your home this winter.

Just read it on my front page internet connection. It's always filled with the latest news and this was one of the articles. Propane will cost you an additional 5 percent, electricity will be 7 percent, and heating oil will be up to 10 percent higher this coming winter.

I guess I better get to cutting more wood and turn off more lights!

Oh wonderful....

We will have a slight reprieve, since we changed propane companies and they are offering our first fill at $1.29/gallon. We still have about 50% in our tank from last year, so we are waiting until the last possible second in order to get as much as we can for $1.29. We are also going to "pre-buy" probably 300 gallons at $1.64 just to make sure we get through the winter paying less than $2/gallon.

We don't have a wood stove, but we do keep our furnace turned down to 64 or even less during the winter. We also invest in the plastic for all of our windows.

Only if the price of the wood in our wood shed rises. :baby04:

We heat with free scrap wood only. But, our Electric Co is raising the rates up each and every month. It is terrible. My electric should be around $65 a month at the most, year round. (used to be $50) (we don't have gas either). No heat pump, no A/C. It is all from raising the school taxes and costs per kilowatt. Our last bill was $130!

We are using less electric, and are paying up the nose. Our new cook stove uses no electricity at all. Steve cuts up wood with his chainsaw. We don't use much water (220 well), we conserve it very well. No dryer except for cold of winter, and then it's 1 load every 3 days or so. 1 load of clothes every other day now, hung to dry, and I only fill up the washer once to wash, not twice. All we have in the house is fans in the summer. Water heater has a jacket over it. We never use our oven in the kitchen. Very rarely a burner. We cook outside in the summer, and on the cook stove in the winter. The biggest part of our summer bill is for the freezer & fridge during a heat wave, I know. Our winter bills are lower than the summer ones. But, for just 2 people, this is a high bill.

I don't get it. Every bill says they got approved for % hike, and will be presented on next bill. How high are they gonna go? 11 years our bill went from $50 to $130, and we are using LESS now. (Our old wood heater would push hot air in the house with a squirrel cage fan.) We looked closely, and our last bill had a $30 increase on their part, not ours, and another increase to come next bill.

Propane vs electric

With a well insulated house, what is the best way to go for heat, propane or electric? (in SW Missouri)

Well if you had been here for the huge ice storm this January, when people were out of electricty for more than two weeks, you wouldn't have to ask that question. Folks with fireplaces, wood stoves and propane heaters were sitting pretty. Folks with all-electric were sitting in hotel rooms (at $60 dollars a day) or with family.

We have a propane heater to supplement our forced air gas furnace (needs electricty to blow), "just in case".

Good thing to consider if you don't have an emergency portable generator or no fireplace.

Getting There 09/25/07 10:47 PM

Yeah & per the local news, LP is going up 30%. Good thing we replaced the oil furnace with propane. :flame: We are so screwed.

Socks, cocoa, porridge, soup, hot water bottles...more socks...

farmwife 09/26/07 06:35 AM

Thank goodness we are in a smaller house that takes less fuel oil. The house we lived in before was a rancher on a hill and the wind came threw the back into the front. It was opened up and never could keep it real warm.

This two story house is much more cozy. These are times when people wished they had the small house, I am sure!

Cash 09/26/07 08:17 AM

A 10 percent increase in fuel oil prices might be the best we see here in Maine. The last estimate I saw was for a 15-20 percent increase if we get anything like a normally cold winter here.

gccrook 09/26/07 12:07 PM

Already locked in my propane for this winter. Will not have to think about it again until next August.

Jan Doling 09/26/07 12:13 PM

We look forward to winter to cool off.

Jim S. 09/26/07 01:41 PM

Thank God for trees! We got our wood bought this year for the same price as last year. Hickory and oak.

TexasArtist 09/26/07 01:53 PM

Last year was nasty nasty cold weather and it looks to be the same this year. I'm so glad I have my woodstove to heat this 16x 24 cabin with. The electric out here is sky high so I can only imagine what the bill would be if I used it to heat.

ricky 09/26/07 05:39 PM

hate to say it but my home is about 2000 sq feet i bought a wood stove last year and it burned about 5 face cord. the new stoves with converters are the nuts. we have to open a door most all winter to cool it down a bit. the stove paid for it self the first winter. and the new huskey saw not to mention my sliding rear gmc window. :baby04: wood is good.... free wood even better
now if we could only use the wood for electric

RosewoodfarmVA 09/27/07 08:10 AM

1 gallon of gas gives me a winters worth of heaterwood....I guess that that gas is gone up about 30%.

That means that my total heating bill has also gone up....by 30 cents!

texican 09/27/07 10:11 AM

I'd hate to know I had to heat with heating oil..... it could go through the roof if Iran keeps getting uppity. There isn't an upper price ceiling.

Thank my lucky stars I've got free natural gas.

Only if you bought gas for $1 per gallon.

canfossi 09/28/07 03:48 AM

Good thing I have a smaller new house, it's much more energy efficient, we use propane for heating, guess I'll be burning more wood this winter. Is it cheaper to buy the propane in summer vs. during the winter if I have a choice? Thanks Chris

farmerscotty 09/29/07 04:38 PM

Yes heating is costing more....

my phone is ringing more this year than ever, people are fed up with propane, electric, and fuel oil prices......and they have figured out they are not coming down......warm up with wood! YEAH.
