Go to your neighborhood hardware store and get yourself a whole bunch of large GLUE BOARDS for rats. Then put them around where they are getting in but not so your poultry will step on them. When the little pests step on the glueboards they won't be able to run very fast and most likely will stop and try to get out of them. It wont' hurt the dogs and you will have the proof you need. We had a cat step on one and they are not easy to get off. The glue boards come in two sizes, small for mice and large for rats.. or dogs in this case.
Check with your county as far as what the money they collect for dog license goes for. Back in Wisconsin it is used to pay people for dog damage to livestock. My old neighbor had a dog kill a bunch of her chickens and the county reimbursed her for the cost of them because that is what they used the dog tax money for.
Good luck.

Don't feel that just because the cops told you you "need proof" doesn't mean that you can't file suit. He is a cop, not a lawyer. You might be better off waiting till you have more proof, but nothing legally is stopping you from filing suit now. Remember, civil laws only needs "preponderance of evidence", not "beyond a reasonable doubt".

go to wal mart.... buy a 60 buck clor night vsion survelance cam, it plugs right into a VCR.
it has 100 foot of cord with it
I had to put one of these in my drive way so when I go somewhere I put in an 8 hr vcr tape to record any action.

they work better, if you put a 75 floodlight on whatever it is your aiming it at at night.

they also, have sound.

for 60 bucks....
good deal

or you could put up a fence all around the bird pens and leave the danes run loose all night.... they might catch a wienerdog snack

or go wireless

I like the rat glue board idea. Put dog food right in the middle of four of them. Nail them to a board.

Remember that dachshunds squeal when cornered. Be prepared for lots of noise.

It sounds to me like skunks, not dauschunds. And the tracks can look very similar if you don't know what you are looking for.

Just something to consider.

This works really well - I use the same method for my chicken pen, but have the mesh going 3' out from the fence. I'm hoping that by the time the mesh rusts away, the foxes will have given up completely.

Game cameras aren't expensive. My brother got some for $50 each from Ebay and they work excellent! Dachsies are hunting dogs, par excellence. Their main prey is badger and feral hog. Not kidding. In Germany, they have more leg. Here they've been bred to have shorter legs. I know of maybe 2 or 3 breeders who imported German dachshunds and bred to that standard. Those dogs tend to be wirehaired and be excellent blood trackers.

I would have put an end to this the first time they chased the kids , well ok I wouldnt have but their four footed body guard would have .
game camera, snare , good old fashioned steel trap (neighbors couldnt deny it when you had the matching foot to their three legged mut)
I'd avoid poison , live trap would be good though they can have their mut back when they pay damages

Once a dog gets the taste of blood....

They will not quit period. They will keep coming back as long as there is animals to kill. I agree take pictures, keep detailed records and take them to court. I am sorry you have to deal with this. We have horrible neighbors that I cannot even go in my back yard to have some peace and quiet without his two dogs going nuts. I tell them to shut up and they just bark more. Lovely...
blessings,
Jennifer

That's a lot of money to loose. Can you rake out a shallow "moat" around the pen with a wire from the electric fence to the water? Ok, I know it sounds dumb, but a few jolts would probably keep the little buggers away. To make it safe in daylight hours, just turn off the power.

I hope you can find the proof and collect the money they've cost you.

You could place a tasty poultry snack on a post and platform in a pit close to or in your pen with camoflage on top and when they fall in take pics and call the cops.... you would have proof and it would be inside your fence and with the birds you have already filed a report about. This would of course involve some serious labor on your part, but I doubt they are doing this because they are hungry. They are doing it because they have found easy prey and will not stop until contained or disposed of.
If you could fix some kind of funnel system, like a crab trap, where it gets smaller as they go in so they can't get out, that might work too. But I think you will need live bait to make a trap work.
Do you have a yardsales site down where you are? You could post you were looking for a camera on there and might find one cheap, or to lend.
And, call a lawyer find out what the law really says not just a cop's interpretation of it....
Good luck with it, hope it works out!
Anna

Ask around your local hunter friends and see if they have a game cam. You need the ones that have a flash (cheaper) or night vision (more expensive.) Set it up at a low angle.

Take pictures of any footprints, get casts if necessary.

Lower the wire on your fence. Crank up the voltage.

Leave a nice bowl of anti-freeze outside the perimeter. (Dogs love the sweet taste - not so much the painful death)

Who let's daschunds run around at night? Won't they get eaten by raccoons or coyotes?

Talk to other local livestock owners, see if there is a local lawyer who specializes in such disputes.

Labor day morning I went out to the pen and found 40 dead.... well slaughtered is a better word. None of my big turkeys were killed but my med (8-12lbs) were killed. Dogs had gotten into the turkey pen.

The prints were small dogs paw prints. I couldnt believe we didnt hear something!!
and our dogs (Great Danes in a pen on the other side of the house didnt raise any major fuss)

anyway... the ppl who live behind us have some daschunds and they are mean lil suckers! kids can't walk down there cause they will run out and bite em.

I have complained to these neighbors before because these little demon dogs chase my cows (yes, I know the cows are stupid to run from such little dogs lol)
and they have chased my chickens that free range.... I have always seen them more as a nuisance than a threat.

I knew these dogs had to be at least a part of the pack who got into the pen. (under the fence) But had no proof.

I called the sheriff and filed a report of killed livestock so there would be some record. Took pics and cleaned up a major mess.

It happened again 2 weeks later... they killed 22 more turkeys & 11 chickens) this time I heard them.. ran out w/ my shotgun... heard little yippy barks and they were gone before I could even see em little lone shoot em.

(we did put a hot wire up around the outside of the pen.... but these guys get under it) I also put a baby monitor out in the pen to warn me.

well they struck again at 2:30 this morning....

this time they killed my sons favorite rabbit (thru the pen hole for feed!!!) and 4 chickens + 2 guineas.

I saw them!!
But again... these little suckers are fast and its very dark.

Now.....
The sheriff told me that if I have proof it was their dogs I can take them to small claims court to try to get some $$ for the turkeys back.....

How and I gonna get proof?? they are smart little suckers!!
I have filed a report each time to be able to show a pattern and record of loss.

lets face it...
if someone came and told me dachshunds were killing their livestock I'd laugh at em!

Have put out a trap... didnt work.... (cept to catch my cat)

sat up all night more than once waiting to catch em w/ camera and gun. nope.

I don't want to start a feud... but this is lots of $$$ and work on our part....
I haven't been back down there to talk to them again cause every time I have gone before they did nothing.

and I want proof!!

They are breaking no criminal laws cause there is no leash law here... its a civil matter.

what would you do?

please keep in mind.. its me and 5 kids here... hubby is working out of town... and I do NOT have the $$ for motion sensitive cameras or surveillance cameras etc....

Sounds like you aren't going to get much done unless you do it yourself. SSS is my suggestion.. You won't get your work/money back but you won't have to worry about those predators again either.

Make friends with the chief of police and invite him over for a backyard BBQ. He just might find a way to shut them dogs up. It's always nice to have a few influential friends. LOL

and glue traps?
they are just being dogs, we dont wanna be cruel.
its the owners , not the dogs who need pain.

Please don't do this. The dog has no idea he is doing something wrong, and no idea why he is dying in agony.

I saw a cat die of that once. I wont forget the sound. It died on the way to the vet to be put down.

I shot some dogs that ate my chickens with this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat-shot

Including my dog, a Pointer. He hasn't eaten another chicken in about 3 years. I lit him up and it didn't kill him. Shot with a 9 mm round at about 40 feet. If you shoot too close you can kill what you are shooting at.

I would load up a clip and light them up. When they go home as a bloody mess both they and the owner will get a wake up call.

You might want to take a photo right before shooting them in case the neighbors get fiesty.
