Do you know what the response time for Law Enforcement officers to come out to your place?

I always get a giggle when folks move out to the country and build their nice homes, and insist on having a state of the art security system installed. Such systems might work in large cities, where there are actually people available to respond to such security problems.

In my county, we have two deputies on duty, and two constables. That is, unless they're out of the county on other duties, or sick, or tied up with another emergency.

I've only needed to have the law come out once, in twenty years, and that was for a preventative action. I told them if they couldn't come out in a hurry, they could come out the next day and bring body bags... there was one deputy available... he rustled up a backup constable (one of my neighbors down the road) and it took them 45 minutes! If it's not a life or death emergency, they just want you to make a report in the office.

I've had talks with the sheriff, and with the constable, about security, and they both agree that I'm basically responsible for my own safety. They're not there to protect everyone, they will if they can, but it's just not possible... The constable has told me how I should treat emergencies... Calling 911 is great, if they actually know where you live, and can get there, in a reasonable amount of time...

So, do you know if there's even anyone available to call for assistance (LE) and if so, how long is it going to take for them to get there?
We have 9 full time police officers / sheriffs deputies and about a half dozen reservists who live within a 5 mile radius of our road. Anytime we call for enforcement , at least 2 or 3 of them respond within 2 minutes in their POVs and secure the situation for the on duty patrols or state patrol when they arrive on the scene.

Not a perfect setup, but it works for us,

Uhhuh! Police patrols are like wire taps. They are an invasion of privacy!

Best never to have to call the police. Shoot and kill the burglar, then throw him in the woodchipper.

No trial, no reports to file! There are better things to do with my tax money than pay a $50K salary.

How are they a invasion of your privacy?

Once you leave out of your home. Your privacy is now public.

I have no problem paying for police. I DO NOT want to support them in infinging on folks rights. I do expect them to uphold the laws and ordanances of the area.

Traffic patrol is important. Most folks want it. Untill they get a ticket then the police are being to agressive.

We have a 10 mph overance. You will not even get pulled over unless you are running over 10 mph. Yet, folks still get upset when they pull a 14 over ticket. Its all the sudden discrimination or what ever.

We do need police. Some one has to be there. If everyone took care of their property and did as they should on public road ways. There would be little need. Yet, most of us know that is not going to happen.

Never had to call the Law out to my place, and I hope I never do. I suspect it would take a very long time to get a response, in spite of the very large force now in place in the county.

A few years ago I remember an accident call a few miles from my grandparents, took the state boys 3 hours and 4 tries to find the location. By the time they got there the woman who flipped her car was already at ER and some neighbors had righted the car again, just needed the police for insurance as she took out a mailbox and a chunk of hillside. I currently live within looking distance of our asst. chief of police, but from what I hear it still took about 6 blocks for someone to stop his step son and one of his gang banging buddies to quit shooting for the street above us while they were busy playing wild west/high speed car chase.
