Another vote for Troy Bilt, we bought our used 6 hp econo-horse about twenty years ago. Been used every year since for our three 30x50 foot gardens which it originally tilled out of our rocky-clay soil. Only thing we've done is put three sets of tines on it and change the oil.

The best rototiller is one that is left at the store.

We have a Craftsman. (It's over at my son's right now.) My dad bought it back in ... oh, golly... '83? '84? Don't recall how much he paid, but I gave him $200 for it in '86.

It's been going strong ever since. DS used to till neighbors' gardens for $25 when he was in high school. He and his buddy tilled their new garden this year with it. It has definitely been a workhorse, and taken a lot of pounding. But it still starts right up and keeps a-goin'.

Nick rebuilt the carb a year ago, but other than that, it's been an absolute champ. Parts are still available, as is the exploded diagram / schematic.

No idea how much they are now, but if you can find one used, you'll be golden.

IMO, of course.

Pony!

I've rented different rear-tine tillers over the years and the one that stands out is the Troy Bilt. Oh the others will mess your soil up a bit but the TB really breaks through the plant material and chops it up well. It gets down into the soil as deep as you want it to and gets it aerated better than digging and raking. It is easy to use compared to the others. I like to rent the 7HP TB - it easily gets my 45x55' garden done and the plot usually has plenty of weeds, plant material, compost and manure on it. BTW, I am a woman and can handle the machine by myself.

Reverse Tines

We bought a little Troy-built 3 years ago.
We made a Big Mistake, though.
We bought the one that has Tines that turn "Backward"

It'll turn even the hardest Soil up, until it's fine as powder.
But you have to PUSH the dumb thing Forward.
Even with the Drag-bar set as high as It'll go, the Wheels
Will NOT pull it.
It sure turns up a fine seed-bed though.
I don't know, maybe I'm missing something.
But, I would not buy another one that works this way.
The Tines Have to Go Forward. Believe me.
Have Fun
