JimS, I love your barn. It looks almost exactly like the one on my parents' place.

Ford8N,
Visiting Cali is perfectly safe, Cali actually has a fair gringo population. There are about 13,000 gringos in the Bogotá area, the Bogotá airport has about 21 planes arriving from the U.S. everyday loaded with gringos and tourists.
I've been doing business here for 12 years and living here full time for 5, love the place with the year around spring weather, but I'm pretty much burned out on waiting until "manana" for everything and the quality of workmanship here is not the best in my opinion.
We are actually looking into moving back, possibly to the Ozarks or maybe KY, who knows.

We have lots of homesteadingtoday neighbors! You would be surprised.
I have a great location, an hour to Texarkana, an hour to Shreveport, an hour to Longview.
But I mostly stay in my neck of the woods! lol!
Love all those log cabins.... I may just have to get me one yet!

Thanks! It's 70 years old and solid oak. Made from lumber sawmilled off the place when they cleared it. It used to be a 400-acre farm; most of that is now houses. The barn needs some siding, and it is going to get it as soon as I can afford it. It is worth saving. It has a built in corn crib I'd like to take out for the space, and I would like to put two slider doors in the center back opening. The loft holds over 1,000 square bales. We've had 1,100 in there. I now store rolls up there.
The original portion of my house is also solid oak...studs, rafter, joists, and floor and wall sheathing! We put in central heat and air...you should have seen those guys trying to saw holes! Sawzall blades went BING, BING, BING!!!

I decided to join the fun! These were all taken within the last hour.

One chicken and two of the wild turkeys that hang out near our coop. The most we ever counted was 73 at one time.

The new planting

Wheat that is due to be harvested in a day or two

The corn field

The pond, with our Canadian Geese semi-permanent guests

The barn on my parents place was built in '34 I believe, in the same fashion...sawed from their own trees at the same time the house was built. The house is completely built of heart pine. The barn also has a built in corn crib and three stalls with hay chutes from the loft.
I love that barn and it breaks my heart that it will be torn down. When Daddy was sick with cancer he wouldn't let anyone do repairs on it...kept saying he would do them when he was better. He never got better and died two years ago of colon cancer. Now the floor joists in the barn loft have rotted and it's unsafe.
I plan to salvage as much of the barn as I can and we will use it to finish our TV room above the garage. (Although I still haven't given up hopes of saving it.)

Wow....you all have such wonderful homes. I am especially jealous of those of you with water and views. We live in the woods on about 4 1/2 acres, but as I get more into the homesteading, I want more land...smaller house! For now though, it is a great area, beautiful hardwoods, and a good start for us!
This is the back yard...I wish DH would clear more!!

This is a massive hill on one side of the house and since we don't see much snow here, the kids "land surf"!

All the animals off to the right of the yard.

The house from the road.

This is next door...about 50 ft from my property line. Ya think he'd let me "acquire" some of his land??!! LOL...He is a nice guy and lets us fish his ponds since we have no water on our property. Now, he has my DREAM homestead!
Keep posting...this is really cool!
