Yep, and that's the point.

When you type one key at a time, like I do, it makes a HUGE difference. Especially if you're chatting live on instant messenger (in which case, people get very impatient when you're typing verrrrrrryyyyyyy slooooowwwwwwwwly). So you take every shortcut you possibly can.

I agree with you Michigan Farmer.
There is enough confusion with people misunderstanding others entries on the web that adding acronyms to the mix, adds to the problem.

the special education field is also rampant with acronyms.....

have you ever had to have an IEP with a BIP for a kid with BD right after having a MEETS to determine the LRE with the LEA?
(Individualized Educational Plan with a Behavior Intervention Plan for a kid with Behavior Disorder right after having a Multidisciplinary Educational Evaluation Team Summary to determine the Least Restrictive Environment with the Local Education Agency?)

sure I noticed that, I also noticed that the 1st sentence was total giberish to me and just a waste of space as it was unreadable to me. anyone seen Vanna? I need to buy a vowel or two...

But if 2 people from the special ed field were text messaging, it would make perfect sense for them to use the abbreviations.

Depends on the situation.

TWPIDEUWTAM?

Yes.
If two people were from the special ed field, then it would make perfect sense.
But if one was in the special ed field and the other in the football field they would not understand each other.
The whole point is does everyone understand what the acronym means?

But when you're text messaging/im'ing with someone, it's generally a friend and you know what they do or don't understand.

Most acronyms at forums are standard ones used at most forums, so *most* people understand *most* commonly used acronyms.

It's easy to pick them up.

Agreed! I understand most of the acronyms used here, and can usually figure out those I am not familiar with.

But the point remains, the OP said he did not understand many of the acronyms being used So obviously it isn't so easy for some.

If it were so easy, ACMCDI.
