Every group has its own lingo. My hubby could turn your brain to mush in minutes with his oilfield talk. Actually, I *have* seen people's eyes glaze over in response.
He's a petroleum engineer, and it's a family joke that if you talk to him, you get the drilling report.
Hang around on the Internet long enough, and you'll start typing in acronyms, too.

Type your acronyms....just don't expect to communicate.

Everytime someone replies to me with an acronym for my name, I think they are calling me NorthWest!
OK...I want to know what these are too:
KBY, ML!
CBY, ML!

Has anyone else here seen that television commercial where the mother and daughter are talking in internet chat acronyms?

I figured out a long time ago that I needed to learn them or I'd be spending more time asking what they mean than I would spend communicating. Some of them are simple, and some are harder to figure out. There are lots of lists online that explain them. It's kind of a case of keep up or get left behind. I've learned a lot of them, but I'm still partly left behind. LOL

IMHO, Texting will wipe out the rest of the English language, the same way as "911" has wiped out Darwin's theory.

Acronyms
WWYD who would you defend?
WWJD doesn't that stand for who wants Jack Daniels?
I get quite a kick out of the acronyms that are used incorrectly by someone just starting to use them.

I thought about you, MF, last night...
I am selling an older Stidham 2 horse trailer - needs some TLC (tender loving care) but is structurally very sound. Tack/changing area in the front and all...
Anyway, I would like $1200 OBO. I put that on the sign I put on the trailer.
Younger guy stops to look at it - 30ish or so... Asks me what OBO means. I thought THAT was pretty much like OK. EVERYONE knows OBO means Or Best Offer.
*shrug*
Guess I'm more Acronymy than what I thought...

The only thing I can see about it is that it "Bumps" the message back to the top of the list.

TEOTWAWKI is The End Of The World As We Know It.
TSHTF is The Stuff Hits the Fan.

I know we all use them ,,,but what happen to a slower pace life and simpler life,, whats wrong with spelling, everyone wants everything to be instant.. short cuts in spelling out words and sentence.. When we use all these short cuts what are we actually teaching our children? I have grand children that alot of the times are sitting next to me reading alot of these post, and ask gram how come adults dont spell out their words, dont you guys know how, how come we have to take spelling in school if we could use short cuts instead, so since it has been brought up by my children i have tried to use alot less and catch my self, not realizing how many i did use.. Doesnt seem like a big deal, to alot of people but i guess if my children have noticed how we use shortcuts on words, what else do adult use short cuts on that children notice and will learn from our examples. just my opinion

It's the chorus to "Cum By Ya", "Kum By Ya" or "Come By Here" depending to which song book you're using.

I'm positive with the use of acronyms and text messaging, children of today won't be able to spell correctly.
It seems that American people are getting lazier and lazier every day. Now in addition to driving everywhere and walking the least possible, it's also too much "work" to talk without using acronyms. Heck, even big business is doing it as there isn't a Kentucky Fried Chicken anymore - it's KFC.
Even typing messages on the computer has become too much "work" and acronyms appear.
I'm afraid to think what a child of today's writing will be when an adult. They won't be able to spell anything correctly.

There are a few accronyms common to homesteading today, and I understand those, but there are a lot of new people who come in, and just start spewing strings of letters.
Is it really THAT difficult to type a sentance?

FWIW, (YMMV), I think it saves a lot of typing time. HTH.
(Translation: For what it's worth, (your mileage may vary), I think it saves a lot of typing time. Hope that helps.)

I think that DSG= Dear Sweet Grandson
the special education field is also rampant with acronyms.....
have you ever had to have an IEP with a BIP for a kid with BD right after having a MEETS to determine the LRE with the LEA?
(Individualized Educational Plan with a Behavior Intervention Plan for a kid with Behavior Disorder right after having a Multidisciplinary Educational Evaluation Team Summary to determine the Least Restrictive Environment with the Local Education Agency?)
*Didja notice how much room the first sentence takes up compared to the 2nd???*
