I use Acronym Genie, found at http://www.acronymgenie.com/

You download it, put it on your desktop, and when you see an acronym you don't recognize, you look in your acronym genie to see what it means.

It has something like 20,000 acronyms in it.

Okay (not OK), Michigan Farmer, I am guilty a charged.
Just this morning I used WIIFM in a GC thread. I think you were in that thread. If so, know that the acronym stands for "What's in it for me?".

I don't use many, but stay on me if you see me doing it!

edited to add (ETA): I just realized I said "GC". That would be "General Chat".

there was a reference to the Acronym's being against any HT rules. I've never heard of that rule.

Hmmmm- I guess I better go read the rules again.

We get that way from texting, btw.

by the way

no disrespect or attempt at excluding non-texters intended.

really.

shb is a common one with Business Offices. Should Have Been... I think it depends on your affiliation how much you use acroynyms and what they are... Here at Purdue? What means one thing on Homesteading means something entirely different at the University.

OK is short for Oll Korrect. A play on words and intended. Sounds fine? But ain't.

FYI - I think you'd be surprised, MF, how MANY acroynms you yourself use daily. Pardons for the MF acronym, btw.

You know, I just looked, and now I don't see it. Maybe someone removed it just to mess with me, or perhaps I'm crazy.

OW (oh well)

LOL (laugh out loud) When I first started chatting online, or posting online, I felt like I was playing a game. I kept looking for Vanna White to see if I could buy a vowel.

I will just ask in the future if I think its important enough.

I appologise if I offended anyone. I get kinda beligerant sometimes, and type before I think.

In the whole scheme of thiings it really isnt important.

The acronyms are also a convenience if you are Instant Messaging someone. Since IMing is live, the passage of time is more critical than if one is simply posting on a message board, hence the common acronyms. For that matter, while having a convo about a particular subject, it's not hard to make up your own acronyms when you know the other person will get it, as it's in context to things you are already discussing. Anyone can do this. YC,T.

I wasn't offended, worried that I had broken a rule I missed ( I sometimes read fast and process slow!).
I forget sometimes that what I take for granted as being common knowledge isn't.
We all have off days, and can be grumpy so no worries! I would tell you to ask me if you wanted to know what one was, but I probably would't be able to help! I have no clue what the last CBY or YY things are......

Its not just you michigan farmer. They drive me nuts. If there are too many acronims in a post, I honestly just lose interest and move on to another post, no matter how interested I was in the post in the 1st place. I am not the greatest at typing, but I take the time to type out the full words. Its not much of a time or space savings to shorten things up. Really its not.

I'm new here~ so some of them are a challenge for me~ am I correct in guessing that all the Dh, DS and DD are "dear" husband, son and daughter?

Oh~ and about CH~ I don't know where you read it but if it were refering to the reptile industry in anyway it meant Captive Hatched.

they get under my skin too max. i can see common conversational uses..like "lol", "IMHO", "HT" is usually obvious, but when someone uses them in a conversation that is based on specialized topicality, it is very annoying. it does come off as a bit elitist.
