We only rent for one day and can split 2 cords. Use three people: one to bring logs closer to spliter, one to split, one to haul away/stack.

I cut the logs to length where they fall down/cut down. Family loads them into back of truck. Dump pile the logs next to where we plan to stack outside the back door.

If you live in the north and burn a lot of wood, live out away from easy access to a rental one, then I would buy one.

I have learned the hard way to think about the use compared to the cost of large equipment for the homestead though.
We have wasted a lot of money.
We own a large tiller we never use anymore now that the garden had been worked and used for several years.
We bought a chipper shredder that we never use anymore as we can't keep it in good working order as it sets unused too much.
We were going to buy a tractor but bought a 4 wheeler instead. First smart thing we did!
We were going to buy a log splitter but they cost so much and one we were renting blew a seam when we were splitting elm and we were so thankful that we did not have to deal with the problem.
The rental place was not upset at all. Says that happens all the time and they just weld the seams back but we do not weld even though that was another stupid purchase we made. We have an expensive welder that we had to get someone else to operate for us when building the green house. Never needed it sense. DUMB!
Anyway... we rent a splitter once a year for $25.00 a day and if we get it Friday night we have it all weekend for the same price as they are not open.
Divide that into a few thousand dollars and you will see what I mean.
We are FINALLY getting smarter. It's way past time!

Does anyone know how to determine the splitting power of one? What's the formula to come up with "X" tons?

dia of piston in inches squared, x .785 x pressure in psi = pounds of force. divide by 2000 to get tonnage.

Its great until ya want it and someone else has rented it , the place goes under or the yucky times come. I want certain things to be here. I find renting makes alot more sense to me as I run out of storage

As far as re welding the cylinder and they keep "having to redo it" Likely they are not great welders and have messed up the original properties of the metal and it is fatigued due to heat or there was a defect there to begin with. A replacement cylinder is likely needed not a repair...
