Watch out Rock these land grabbers will try to get you to sell that land to them for half price.
You tell them that the squirrels and rabbits alone are rare on your property and are worth more to you than the money they have, including ...

I rather suspect absentee landowners aren't allow to vote locally. You have to be a permanent resident to do so. Chances are it is locals pushing building codes and such, not outside influence.
If you want to up your insurance to full replacement value then don't be surprised if you get a huge premium increase to cover the increased risk of the insurer.

In Minnesota if you own property at a certain address you can choose to vote from that address.

Well ma'..Your attitudes seem to reveal a bitter man without much in the way of positive life expectations. Those that urge theft or property damage by others make it pretty clear what laws, rules and ethics they may live by themselves...Glen

Do people get a mailing address for unimproved land? Or, are you talking about people who have built a house on property, so have a mailing address assigned by the post office...and they only visit it occassionally? If they are paying taxes for a house and land, why shouldn't they have voting rights in that county?

Beeman, if I made the thread drift I'm sorry.
It basically boils down to...
old folks fall for scams... they've always been easy marks... that why con men like to hit them... What are the options? Lock every person away that has the con man gene? Probably won't happen. Educate old folks... hey they're old, they should know better. Get them into old folks homes? Always an option. If old folks have kids, they should set up a trust, otherwise, they're apt to lose everything when they're put into a nursing home, or sign away their life assets on a bogus contract of some sort...
Absentee landlords. I have zero pity on any absentee landlord who doesn't make local connections for someone to look after their land. Contrary to popular belief, the law enforcement establishment isn't in the business of protecting private property or human life. Their job is to investigate crimes and arrest people. If there isn't a local person involved with an absentee landlords property, who's gonna call the law to come out and catch timber thieves? As far as a local knows, the absentee might be having it logged... and if they called the law, they'd just look foolish. I know my absentee landlord's landmans name and phone, and have called him before about 'troubles'. One of the timber properties adjoining mine could be stripped to the bone, and illegal at that and I wouldn't give a hoot........ the first time I contacted the owner, he cursed me like a dog, then called my house and cursed him... we'd never met him and he thought we were some other people, but he wouldn't back down, so when the buzzards pick his bones, I'll smile.
btw... to any old folks here I might have offended, if you can understand what I'm talking about, I'm obviously not talking about You!
I know lots of addled folks of all ages that lose everything in the end... some folks are meant to end up at the end of the race with all the toys and some aren't... the old sayings "a fool and there money" and "if it's too good to be true, it is" are good sayings.

If that were true, I alone could vote in several different counties. I know some average Joe's that'd be able to vote in multiple counties, and several states.... Just imagine what George Soros or Bill Gates could do if they could vote everywhere they owned land or homes.
I think a person can only have one legal residence. Home home.

Texican, it wasn't you it was the rant by Brreitsma that got going the different way. I think that their subject is a valid one and worthy of a thread of it's own.
Prosecution for log theft is a tough thing. Most logs end up out of the county and then of course there's the question of which log is the one at the sawmill that was stolen along with placing a value on the log. The laws all sound great but rural law enforcement is extremely limited and also sometimes extremely biased if you know what I mean.
I only began this post as a warning to potential or current landowners that possibly don't live on their place yet or have so much land they don't go to all of it often.
Many don't or have never lived in a rural area and some don't realize the trees have value beyond firewood, this is just a heads up.

I agree, for major elections. I just thought maybe for county issues that anyone paying property taxes in that county may have the right to vote for those county issues that might affect their taxes.
Obviously, I don't own more than one home...or I might have known this.

Yes, any kind of theft should be prosecuted and the thief made to pay back double. I never justified theft. I simply stated there was little sympathy for most. Little sympathy and endorsment are two very different things.

If you have two properties you must be rich.
The people who live near the property that you don't live on should come to the property that you do live in, and burn you out (according to the post by 'ma) If you have more than one dog, well maybe you should let them have your extra dogs too, after all you are not using them.

Don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say anyone with a second property should be burned out. I said ones that try to pass local legislation that drastically increases another persons hardship and makes it basically impossible to pull themselves up shouldn't go unpunished. The founders of our country considered personal property and what an owner could do with it to be such a sacred right as to not be subjected to anyone elses will or wishes.

So I ask would you as an ABSENTEE owner feel justified causing this to happen to a LOCAL family because of what you voted on. If so I would hope someone in that family or close to them would attack and damage or destroy your suburban home. By the way I am no longer struggling economically. I am not real comfortable but am far from struggling. There are people living in tents on property they own because a storm took their mobile home and they couldn't replace it with anything acceptable. In those cases retaliation needs to take place.
|
That sounds more like endorsement than sympathy to me.
It takes more than a few people to vote in new laws and codes to a city or county. It sounds like those people who don't want the codes changed should have rallied more support and gotten more voters to oppose it. What do you want to bet, a lot of the people who are against it, didn't even bother to vote?
If you aren't happy with the zoning restrictions where you live, it's time to move to an area that doesn't have them, or just accept that it is a requirement of living there. I am aware that some restrictions are unreasonable...but the people voted for them. So, you are bending to the will of the people, not being subjected to the whims of a few landowners. I understand why that can be upsetting to someone who grew up in a certain area, but time changes, populations grow, urban creep will change small towns into bedroom communities for the wealthy and prices will skyrocket.

[QUOTE=brreitsma "never justified theft. Not one thing I said justified theft." [/QUOTE]
That's true.....you NEVER said anything regarding theft being justified. However you did say a couple of things justifying VANDALISM/ARSON.....so there is a little discrepancy........you don't think much of thieves, but are willing to "look the other way" if someone burns down "THE RICH MAN'S " place or trashes his property? Sorry, I don't have much use for either thieves or vandals/arsonists......or the "people" who somehow can justify their deeds as well.

Nor should the rights of property owners to Not 'do something' with their land be infringed on by locals. Perhaps the owners wish it to be a wildlife refuge. Their choice. And if they own property, and the law allows them to register to vote at that property, then they have the right to vote...as they choose. Don't like it? Work to change the law.

As I recall, both T. Jefferson and G. Washington were slave owners, as was General Robert E. Lee; so what's your point......should we re-instate slavery again? Or just those who can afford to keep them?

Ask the local farmers who rent land from absentee owners at cash rents with a return (to the landowner) that have lagged land prices. That means many farmers can expand on rented land that they otherwise would have had to put capital up for (which they likely would not have been able to afford).
My wife's cousin owns a chemical company, fastener (bolt) company, and a plating company and is buying up land all around his house. He bought a farm next door and tore everything down. Reason you ask? He said he doesn't want anyone living within line of sight of him (from is house). So far everything beyond his yard he as rented to the local farmer that has been there for five generations for the low sum of the price of the taxes..... I wish I had his money.

I own three homes in three diferent countys. I only get to vote in one. Not even in county tax questions. The only thing that I have is to atend the county comisinors meting and make my point then I can't vote on it.
