I have a 1943 home veterinary manual that recommends:

-half cup of kerosene for bloat, and mentions most bloat occurs before a storm
-turpentine and ginger for Monday Morning disease, founder, & colic
-drops of kerosene for kitten flu
-turpentine & honey for cat worms
-pine tar, aspirin & honey for strangles
-used motor oil for lice in hogs
-cocoa for calf scours
-snuff or turpentine for worms
-pine tar for distemper

the author discourages throwing salt in the eye because it can make the animal vicious.
and a useful cure "For the egg eating hen, place her head on a block and allow an ax to fall on it"

And chamoisee, I'll take your word for it, but I'm not going to try it.

(Blink, blink, blink) My eyes are burning just thinking about it. (Blink, blink.)

I think the most questionable animal cure from the old days were Do nothing, let nature take its course. Animals had no shots, no care, took care of themselves, weren't spayed or nuetered and just kept breeding.

One other one that was used here(not by me or my DH) two 5 gallon buckets filled with water almost to the top. newborn kittens or puppies in the bottom bucket other bucket put on top. I moved here, got down to a reasonable amount of cats and dogs. Spayed and nuetered remaining, no more problem! I have 2 cats 3 dogs. No worry about having any unwanted ones.

An animal with pinkeye is already in great pain. Salt (a normal element in tears) is no way going to cause the animal any additional distress.

That's like saying that jumping off a skyscraper doesn't kill you, it's the hitting the ground part that's the problem. Everyone knew that DDT wouldn't be replaced, and they also knew that there wasn't another product on the market that was even remotely as effective.

This is however a topic for another thread.
