All this talk about kerosene, turpentine, tobacco juice makes me remember ..................

A little boy sittin on sidewalk, shakin up bottle of turpentine, watchin bubbles rise to top. The local priest stopped by and asked the youngster what he had in bottle. The youngster replied, "The most powerful liquid in the world."

The priest responded: "Son, the most powerful liquid in the world is holy water. Just a few drops on a pregnant woman's belly and she can pass a baby boy or girl."

The little boy replied: "Well, that ain't nothin, 3 drops of this on a cat's butt, and he can pass a motorcycle.

Take care.

BANNING DDT killed more humans then Hitler and Stalin combined. Malaria was almost eliminated from the third world before DDT was banned, now it kills millions every year. We now have healthy bald eagles and loons. Too bad we needed to kill 30 million people to do it.

Sorry about the thread drift.

We put used motor oil on some pups that had the mange when we had no money about 35 years ago. It cured the mange right up.

Don't care how good the DDT was at killing skeeters

DDT is actually one of the main reasons we don't have malaria to worry about. It was a problem in this country many years back. They are now approving the limited use of DDT in some countries to try and halt the rampant spread of the disease. DDT was abused like most everything we get ahold of and it does tie in with the theme of this thread. Much of what's done to animals is the if a little is good a lot must be better.
The man/men who came up with the bright idea of spraying the stuff onto kids and adults as they frolicked in a public swimming pool should be removed from the gene pool. If already departed, hope they are suffocating on the sulfur fumes.

Remember that old Johnny Horton song, "The Battle of New Orleans"?
All this talk about gunpowder reminds me of it.

"We fired our cannon, 'til the barrel melted down;
so we grabbed an alligator an' we fought another round.
We filled his head with cannon balls; and powdered his behind.
When we touched the powder off;
the 'gator lost his mind...."

I have been told that Meat Tenderizor will reduce proud flesh on a horse wound. Have also heard of people using lime.

Here's one of several I have used that WORKS but is cruel:

If a cow or goat gets pinkeye, hold the eye open and toss salt in it.

It does work. It's hard on the animal. I used it once, it worked, and I'll never use it again.

Salt is the best cure for pinkeye to use on any animal.

Especially when the eye is about to bust from the pressure pushing it out.

Getting rid of unwanted stray dogs and cats was easy. Just catch them and takes a corn cob and rub there butt raw under there tail and pour turpentine on it, and turn it loose, and they will run away, and never come back.

To Get rid of to many puppies being born, just go to the creek ....................

Strained Bacon greese is good for any kind of sore or wound, pack it full. and it will heal.

Used motor oil is good for getting rid of mange and worts on cattle. Cover it heavy.

Pine tar will keep flies away from open wounds. they hate the smell.

No, I don't have a link. I have several volumes of the Foxfire books that were printed in the 70s. I could give you a link to Google, if, you'd like. Or try Abebooks, I've bought from them before and always liked dealing with them.

Just last month, the old time vet around here advised me to drench my cow Christine with a mixture of turpentine and dish soap when she came down with the bloat.

I can remember my mom wrapping a strip of raw bacon around my foot when I was a kid and stepped on a bee. Even at age 6, I had the feeling this was NOT a good idea ... LOL

It took three men to hold me down when they finally had to dig the 'stinger' outta my badly infected foot ... LOLOL

Pretty easy to say from the comfort and knowledge of the present. These were just folks using what they had available. Some of the old cures were remarkably effective.
