If you want to use cattle for draft you actually can use cows, they don't have to be steers. The drawback with cows is that for a short time each year you won't be able to use them. Last month of pregnancy and first week or two after calving for the hardier breeds like Highland, Galloway, Zebu, Longhorn, etc.
My Highland travels 60 miles roundtrip each year to meet her bull, get her hooves trimmed and, if she has a heifer, get her calf immunized and tatooed.
Stud fee is $125, I pay for fuel and of course feed if we are having a particularly dry year. The breeder does the hauling. That is a lot cheaper and easier than keeping a bull on the place. There are other breeders closer, but I'm loyal to the folks that sold me the cow.
