Over the years our Haveahart trap has captured the kitty 3 or 4 times, a chicken or two, and a very sweet little skunk who did not spray me when I opened the trap. It has NEVER captured a coon. Fortunately the coons usually prefer the cat food next door to facing down highly irritated geese.

If you do live trap then please kill the coon. Do not release it elsewhere. When you move animals and release them you are potentially spreading disease as well as dumping your problem in someone else's backyard. You may think it is empty country but others live there. Trap and kill.

Okay, another update!

Yesterday, I observed a kitten go into the trap, (whidh was set BTW) and run aound playing in it! Oy vey, something is wrong! Roger checked it again and found a wire bent.

So...we baited it with marshmallows and caught our first, of many, varmints. I shot it this AM. We saw at dawn THREE more rsccoons by the birdfeeder.

Guess we'll be trapping and shooting for awhile!

Ardie, the best solution we've found for coon, as well as other pests, is our dogs. The dogs love coons - to eat. We have have livestock guardian and herding dogs. They actively hunt much of the day, and probably night as well. I like this because it means I don't have to mess with setting traps, etc and the dogs actively patrol and hunt.

We used to have coon around here but I haven't seen one in over 15 years - the reason is the dogs. The dogs also snack on mice, voles, coyotes, foxes, etc.

I don't know if your situation will allow for free roaming dogs but it is one thing that can work.

Cheers

I use hard cat food that is only a doller a box and it works great!! But you have to fasten down your trap or the will get out.

We can't have roaming dogs. Roaming dogs get shot .

I can't use cat food as I have very stupid outside cats!

Ahhh. Sweet revenge. This morning another large coon (total=5 in the last 2-3 weeks)
problem was 'resolved'. How did the dodo bird say it in the Ice Age movie??---Burn and Die--Burn and Die.
