Doohap: it's a fuji finepix s9000. has a 10x zoom, but I was on medium to wide angle for most of these shots (the closeup headshots were on about 5x zoom) good camera. very fast to turn on. little shutter lag. the lens produces pics that are a little "soft" compared to my nikon, but it's a great camera for most things.

bumpus: It's a deer. It's life is one of "eat quick before a predator gets here". I've lived with animals (both wild and domesticated) all my life. The fawn was doing what is natural to him. "fight or flight". Had it been a REAL predator (we have coyotes all around here), that fawn would have been dead. This is the way the young animals learn. As he grows older, the fawn will start to run instead of staying on the ground when it's found by a predator. That being said, I called the dogs to heel as I was taking the pics.

The dogs should be put up so the doe will come in and get the fawn.

Put your self in the place of the fawn and being forced by two bigger animals to leave mothers protection.

Many does will leave a fawn like this and not return and the fawn dies.

Same thing with wild rabbits and baby birds.

Ann CLEARLY states in post 7 that she penned up the dogs.

Hey.

If you keep him, fatten him up, and you will have a nice tender barbeque for the Fourth of July;-)

Rf, are you trying to get in trouble?

Ann, there is too much cuteness in those pics. Wish I could've seen the whole thing!

Ann,

Are you in the area with the serious CWD problem?

Use to live in west central WI. Always thought the DNR could do make it easier for the hunters if they were actually serious about lowering the deer population. DH and I use to joke about WI using dead deer as mile markers on the Interstate. Seems like you could not go more than a mile without seeing one.

RF: I'm fairly sure that my SO has been trying to think of a way to do just that

Macybaby: yup. right in the heart of CWD territory. Biggest problem has, indeed, been the government saying only one deer per hunter over the years. That area is nothing but forest, undergrowth and fields of corn and oats. very few people, (altho that seems to be changing ). So the deer are just EVERYWHERE. Last few years the DNR has changed the hunting laws...you can pretty much take however many deer you see during season..and the season has gotten WAY longer now. It's really sad to see a deer that's dying from starvation during the winter.

The good news is that the number of CWD deer last year was down quite a bit. Now they're worried about the wild turkey We've seen flocks that number over 40. ah well....life in the slow lane
