Was the relief valve he installed a replacement or a new addition to your system? Most pumps will not make enough pressure to require a relief valve. Maybe the service man felt there was a need to limit the amount of air pressure that could be put into the tank through the schrader valve by venting thru the relief valve. Since you were observing he could have thought of your safety since he may have perceived you would be doing this in the future. The best way for you to add air would be to turn the pump power off and to open the nearest spigot to the tank and to add air through the schrader valve until air exits the spigot. Once the air exits close the spigot and turn the power on to the pump. End of task. Jet pumps require more skill in adding air but that does not impact you since you have a submersible. You can tell when to add air by observing how much water you can collect under the following circumstances. Turn all spigots off everywhere on the homestead. Flush no toilets. Open the spigot nearest the tank until the pump cycles on and then close that spigot. Wait until the pump cycles off. Place a pail under the nearest spigot and catch water until the pump cycles on. You should have approximately 5 gallons of water. When you get less than 3 gallons of water doing the above test it is time to add air to recharge the system to restore the drawdown. You are now independent of the serviceman for this task and you should be having a reduced power bill and less wear and tear on the well system. Enjoy.

Well thanks for the info!!! ...The relief valve was already there but it was leaking so he replaced it. I am wondering if the county code makes us have that valve? I wouldn't be suprised if they did require it they require so much anymore.
