Three years in Central IL and never had any, I have guinea fowl.
They are their favorites to eat.

I can feel the little buggers crawling on me so I can usually pluck them off before they get attached. On an average day in the tall grass I will pluck of four or five. Once in a while I will miss one. So far this year, I have had three "stuck" which, because I seem to be ultra sensitive to them, makes big nasty welts that lasts for a week or more. Yuck and ewwwwww, but hey, in the country they are just a fact of life!

I don't kill the ones I pluck off that are just crawling around. If I am outside I just give them a toss and if I am inside I will open the door and wing them out. The ones that are attached, usually get flushed or washed down the drain.

It's such a blessing we don't have ticks where we are. Our farm sits in the middle of our pastures, the woods are way over there, on 4 sides. We see maybe 6 very weak ones early spring, they don't get stuck. Our dogs never have any. Now, if we were to go walking in the woods over there, we'd probably have some on us. Since we are way up on a hill, we don't have mosquitoes either, maybe just a dozen in early spring. I am careful to dump all standing water too.

We do a tick check everynight.I don't often find them attached cause I can feel them crawling.About 2:00am when they decide to crawl from where ever they were hiding and find a warm place to go then we have a bed check, dog check and human check and so much for sleeping the rest of the night.

20 - 30 this time of year. Enough that they cause no alarm and only mild annoyance.

If I get one on me I alarm they carry so many diseases and people have died from them here in my state of Georgia. We have Rocky mountain spotted fever, of course lyme disease and several others I cant remember. I don't like any ticks and I pick them off immediately and get an antibiotic on the bite mark immediately and watch the spot for several days to make sure its ok.

Here in my part of Ohio we don't have the tick problem that many of you seem to have.

It can be "too cold" as I saw a picture from moonwolf (I think it was) that had about 100 ticks on his legs.

Familiarity breeds contempt. All the diseases they cary are easily cureable and if we were to become alarmed over them we would be in a constant state of panic for about 3 months a year.

BTW, after the bite occurs no kind of topical antibiotic will help prevent any disease.

I don't like them either but they are a fact of life in Virginia and unless you want to sit inside in an AC house, you get ticks. They seem to go in cycles here and are worse some years than others. This spring they seem a little worse than last. In a few weeks they will decline. I suppose the birds eat them.

I doused myself with DEET today and only had 8 this evening (So far. They seem to appear from nowhere)

ZERO!

We dust ourselves w/sulphur every time we go out in the tall grass or woods.

A neighbor told us that fire ants will eat them. I don't know if that is true.
I never heard that before the neighbor said it.

Top prize goes to the male cat (who is lazy) with 8 during one 'de-ticking' session. Crawling in his fur but all pets get frontline (when does the human version come out??). Female cat had 3, she too has long fur. Dog has had 1, spouse, younger daughter, and I have had 1. Older daughter had one in her scalp which I removed - reminded her when she walks through our woods to wear her hat.

dear god I couldn't live where some of you guys do. In all my years I've had 1 on me. This past weekend me and 3 buddies where clearing the back yard so pushing into and then chopping down heavy brush and we had none. They are around here though. My mom picked one up a few weeks back and the dog came back with 3 the same weekend.

Picking ticks is reason #43 to have a sweetie.

They came out thick and early here in central Oklahoma. I probably find about 5 to 8 crawling on me each day. Luckily, only three have attatched so far.

I usually spray myself down with Cutter or Deep Woods Off. Both have DEET.
