Thanks ladies.

Hey gang! Guess what! I bought two...not one but two...mountain dulcimers today! I bought them from a sweet older gentleman that makes them over by Lowell AR.

He had several and it was a hard decision but I bought a teardrop backpacker and an hourglass baritone.

The second one sounds just like a guitar. I love them both.

OK Marlene, now you MUST learn to play that thing and we will have to bring them next time.

I can already pick out three songs and plan to learn all I can.

I will never be great at it but it is fun to play them.

I also had a lady call me and wants me to show her how to spin. Talk about the blind leading the blind.
She wants to form a club as she knows several that want to learn.
Maybe I will get better at spinning too.

Anyone looking for a dulcimer I will gladly give you this mans name and number.
He still has 5 or 6 made up now and will make you one special if you want him to. Just PM me.

Let the retirement begin, huh Corky

When Noah and I were down in Mountain View, I picked up a DVD and the book that goes with it to learn how to play...so far I've watched and practiced about 20 minutes. The dear sweet lady instructor nearly puts me to sleep...does this mean I need some jazzier tunes?

Noting Joe's musical abilities, do we dare ask him to bring his new guitar and his bass? And I think Shelia had started banjo lessons...I can see it now..."The Buffalo River Homesteaders Bluegrass Band" If Big Joe is reading this I can also hear him laughing.

How many more days do we have to wait this time?

Hugs,
Marlene

I have tons of really good pictures from the campout, unfortunately, my sisters puter is SOOOO slow! I have a loaner laptop from Dennis, but have yet to find a good spot to surf wirelessly. My nephew works at a restaraunt that has a wifi spot and we are stopping by there on our way back from Fayetteville after picking up my check. I'm on vacation for 7 wonderful days!! Kim and I are going to take a short riverboat cruise on the Arkansas on Friday night...they do an evening dinner cruise that goes past the Clinton library as well as other sites in Little Rock... Marlene, we are also coming up your way one day, to make it to Jasper and the Ozark cafe, and their delicious fried cheesecake.......... yummy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also have all the campout pics on a cd if I can't get them posted my self....maybe someone else would be able to do that...........

Marlene,

Yes, we're planning on making the next one, especially since we're gonna be a lot closer now.

Isn't August considered fall? Any thoughts on having it near the end of August folks before the Labor Day crowd? This might be more convenient to those w/ kids starting school, who'd like to come. I'm thrilled it's gonna be at Buffalo point again! I've missed having them down there, there's so much more to do at that location, it's a much better swimming hole & more trees/shade compared to Tyler bend.

Anyways, we plan on making this one what ever the date is, along as it's not before the 15th of August & I plan on being there early.

Noah, Corky & Milt, it was great seeing y'all again at Baker Creek.

Rea

Rea, June, July, and August are Summer! Sept is fall and not all that cool yet.

usually down right hot. I have my wiener roasts the last of October and it is just getting nice and cool in the evening so we can really enjoy the fire.

Mamabear, I meant to tell you yesterday that I hope you and yours can make it in September, you know that old where there is a will there is a way thing

Haven't heard from Christine and Eric, who didn't get to make it last time because of van troubles, hope to see ya'll there also. Can you build a fire in a yurt? I'm just kidding of course, camp ground rules about where you can build a fire and such...oh wait, can we put the yurt over the designated campfire spot?

Rea, I sure hope you will actually get to make it this time. Seems like for the last couple of years you've come this >< close and then something has come up to keep you form making it. You didn't get to go to Steele Creek, and there are still several camping sites on the Buffalo we haven't tried yet...but then again I realize not everyone has my sense of adventure.

Can we close the picking a date so others can check their calendars and see if they can make this one?

Hopefully, I will not have to post all the names of others who have said they would like to come spend a weekend on the Buffalo with us, I actually started to, but I just know I'll leave someone out and I don't want to risk that...you know who you are, now's the time to make the decision to just do it.

Hugs,
Marlene

I'm still liking the later september date...just because I know that I can make it...and being selfish, I really want to be there....
Had a great big fun day yesterday...I've been on vacation since Tuesday...My sister and I went to Little Rock and rode the Arkansas Queen, an old paddle boat. On the way down there, we hit a few yard sales...and I so scored!! I got an old monkey ward cast iron waffle maker, SO, I'm going to make waffles at the fall picnic... There was also a neat car show going on and we spent several hours going back and forth between the car show, and walking in some of the cool shops, and drinking a nice cold cappuchino... vanilla and chocolate.............the dinner on the boat was great, my sister had a couple of drinks, and got a bit tipsy..........we got out of Little Rock about 10pm...all in all a great day. I took about 300 pictures...the sunset was absolutely amazing!! I spent the biggest part of the cruise up on the top decks, taking some spectacular photos...the USS Razorback, a decomissoned sub, was morred next to our ship, so I got some photos of it both at night, with lights, and during the daylight hours........one of these days, I hope to get my pictures uploaded, and post some....sorry this is so long, but I had a great day!!

LaDonna, I vote you go back and delete the first post on this thread to state the dates, location, fees, etc. I'm more selfish then you, with Hubby's job the sooner he gets the dates in the sooner we can find out if he can take that Friday off

I'm looking forward to those waffles.

Sounds like you had a fun weekend with your sis. It was "CrawDad Days" here in Harrison. It was bigger then ever - relocated things around again ... moved the craft booths over near the lake, where the food and music are which is great. Moved the rides and games of chance down a little near the youth center - there were more of all of those. Moved the car show, and car parts/assessory booth around the square -- not being a car person - I didn't truly appreciate old cars and "parts" around our beautiful old courthouse. The crawfish were a little pricey, but exceptionally well prepared - yummm. I hope Don got to make it and had his fill.

Okay, what did the rest of our fellow campers do this weekend now that LaDonna and I are done bragging.

Hugs,
Marlene

Hey All,

Well, I doubt we'll be coming down for the picnic after all this year. I have some major health issues I have to deal with this summer.

I was also informed by certain parties that it is preferred if I just go away.
So I'm obliging. Y'all have another great picnic!

Take care, Rea

This just sounds so good. I have a couple of questions...
Are Hoosiers welcome?
Just where is the Buffalo River campground? It looks gorgeous, is it a state park? My favorite Aunt lives in NW Ark, near Rogers. Is it anywhere near there? I've been telling her about this site. I think she is probably a homesteader by nature.

Marilyn, yes, of course you are welcome.

It is about 2 or 3 hours drive from Rogers. We live about 45 min from Rogers and it takes us 3 to 4 hours from here.

It all depends on where on the river we camp.

It is all State park. It took us 4 hours last time but we stopped to shop.

Rea? Hopefully, you will not allow one person to keep you from sharing a weekend with friends. I hope you can get the health issue taken care of between now and prior to the campout too.

Marilyn, you are more then welcome to join us, bring your Aunt with you One of my favorite couples who have shared several of our campouts, Mike and Wanda, are from Indiana...I was hoping to hear that they would be able to make the one in the fall.

BostonLesley - you mean I'll have to wait to dance around the fire?

Corky, which songs are you learning on your dulicimer? I thought maybe I could work on a couple of the same ones so we can do a duet Nothing too difficult, please - I'm still in the beginers stage.

Hugs,
Marlene

Marlene,
songs I am playing on the dulcimer are....well I have a bunch of them because a Friend had her beginners book copied for me.

I do not do chords but I play the melodies with full strumming.

Oh Suzanna, Wildwood Flower, Amazing Grace, Old Joe Clark,
Shortnin Bread, Ode to Joy, Rock of Ages and a bunch more.
I am memorizing songs and going back and trying to add simple chords. The problem with that is ....none of them are simple.

Not to worry Corky - I don't do chords either -- haven't even tried to do chords yet. I'm getting better with hitting the right places on the frets for melodies...but my strumming leaves a great deal to be desired. And Husband has yet to name that tune when I'm playing so I might just be delusional about the entire thing

How are we doing with picking a date -- are we into October yet? I'm not sure when the water is turned off at Buffalo Point...you know me, I gotta have running water right.

Hugs
Marlene

By camp-out time I may be better. Doesn't matter though. The whole point is to work together to learn so we will just go off in a corner and have fun or maybe I will be brave enough to try it in front of Friends..... and maybe not.

Corky, I figure if we're not very good by then, it will only make others want to try - "surely I can do better then that,"...whereas if we are really really good, it will discourage others from learning

If enough people are interested, I will contract the lady who does lectures (show and tell), on useful weeds. I was thinking it sure would be nice to have a demo on how exactly to make infusions, tintures etc. I've gone on one of her walks and it was very educational for plant identification, and uses. Do I need to find out the cost before anything else?

Hugs,
Marlene

Laura, I don't think the weekend has been picked for sure yet.

It may be different. I don't care as we are retired but others, like you need to schedule it around your jobs and kids. We will see.

Well, at the risk of ticking off some....I am going to decide on the weekend of the 22nd....so it'll be the friday, saturday and sunday of that weekend...sorry if this isn't good for all....but sometimes that is how it goes....if anyone else would like to take over this, and decide on different dates... I'm just afraid that if we wait too late in september, it WILL be too cold.....
