that's a possibility.my drain goes into the septic tank and everything is running freely. perhaps it's in under the house by where the pipe enters. directly on one side of the cabinets is the electrical box cupboards. i opened the door and stuck my head in .clean smell. the other side of the sink is the built in countertop stove. put my head in the cupboard underneath.nothing. over the sink. dead stuff. you could be right. I'll check it out. thanks! Georgia.
To me it sounds like septic gasses. On most homes a vent is on top of house, over kitchen sink, and over the bathrooms if you have or could borrow a flexable plummers drain tool and under sink there should be a cleanout plug. Unscrew plug and run tool up the vent pipe out to top of house, if the cleanout is not under sink its under house, if so you'll have to start there and do the same . Just my 2 cents and I hope you find the solution.

Thanks Eddie. nothing goes outdoors under the sink. everything goes back and joins into the toilet . there is also a vent going up along the electrical pipe and one up from the toilet(not sure if i explained that properly) why I don't think it's gasses is it's a sickly sweet smell like something dead. but as soon as I go back next week I will tear everything apart.

Maggie: that bucket thing sounds like the plan. especially for me ,since I can't even touch a trap to dispose of them when they are dead but I'm sure I could empty a pail. If I am away next winter I will try this. Georgia.

Amyd: note to self to stock up on pine sol on way home
