We only go to town to do shopping and errands once a week. Sometimes only once every 2 weeks. Otherwise H has the car for work only.

We aren't going on a vacation this year. It will be a stay at home and work around the house time.

Sis and I share trips to town and spend the whole day getting things done todgether.

I used to go twice a week to visit dh for lunch (25 miles one way). Now I go once a week and fill up on gas there (it is cheaper in Indiana than in Illinois), do any and all shopping that has to be done and other than church on Sunday, we don't go anywhere. I ride my bicycle anywhere I need to go here in town.

Oh, dont be talkin! ours is 4.44 or so a gallon and it goes up again tonight! lord only knows what it will be when i wake up in the morning. I think I'll be a hermit too. I don't work and I dont have kids anymore . I don't know how some people do it. some I know the 2 of them are smoking also and they have to go back and forth to work 60 miles a day. I go back to the country very soon but I shop and have my appointments in here so I will just have to do all my errands the same day. I don't mind staying put though just as long as I have enough gas for my mower etc. and even then I plan to mow only every 2 weeks or so. Georgia.

Alot of good info! My question is...........does anyone know of products that can actually help you SAVE on gas? I had seen a product online awhile back (can't remember what website it was) but you poured the product into the carburator (I think) and the military had used this for years. Wish I could remember the website. LOL

My middle son and I had a talk about bio-diesel...............it looks like that's more and more up my alley. LOL

Peace and blessings,

kelli

The simple act of driving into the second parking space can also save gas, concerning diagonal parking spaces. Make it look as if you backed into the space, that way you do not have to sit there running , waiting for errant vehicles to pass before you can back out. Most accidents involve backing in parking lots, your killing two with one on this one.

my little suzuki swift (or geo metro) got 42 mpg. then i slowed down to 50 mph (I put tape on the speedometer to block my view of the needle when it went past 55mph and wrote " 50 MPH or so" on it. My gas mileage went from 42 mpg to 50 mpg...that's almost a 20% improvement

Getting better mileage while driving is something I forgot to mention:

Our fuel efficient Chevy's are already great on gas, but I have found both have what I call "Sweet Spots".

Generally speaking, our Chevy HHR gets about 42-45 MPG, when set at about 50 MPH.

Our Monte Carlo tends to sip gas when driving at about 50, and the tach is less than 2000 RPM. (It is still great on the interstate...about 31-32 at 65-70MPH.)

It is a great feeling to drive either car, and get superb mileage. Since we don't drive as much, the extra time we spend driving is enjoyable!!!!

We love to eat at a place about 15 miles from home, and is on an old state highway. I love setting the fuel calculator when leaving, and find that we have gotten 44 MPG when we get home!!!!

Because of high Gas prices I have to go camping instead of driving back and forth

DW said if I had to drive my pickup back and forth to work it would cost me $400 a month just for that.

We live in a small town and almost always have to travel to the bigger city to get things that we need. So now I just get my hubby to get them after work(since he works there). That way I don't have to drive their saving gas and time. We combine trips..like all errands, groceries, bill paying etc we run and do on the same day. For the time when I run out..both my teens don't mind going to the grocery store for me.(on foot).since the stores are not that far from our house. My hubby is getting a motor cycle to drive to and from work in good weather...that should help save gas as he has to drive about 65 miles a day. Right now he is driving someone to and from work so they are sharing the gas expense...that helps too.
As for this summer...all travel plans have been cancelled because of the price of gas.. Just wish I could use that excuse to have my major surgery cancelled..hmmmmm

I use to visit my friends more ...like Messianic 5..but I don't see her that often now...cause with her being in Illinois...and me in Indiana...we may see each other once or twice a month if we are lucky... That may end too if the price keeps going up...thank God for unlimited long distance...

Blessings to all

My wife and I ride to work together when she works the day shift, we are planning our grocery shopping in advance, and not making special trips to the store.

I'm not taking the 4x4 chevy truck out 4 wheelin on the really remote dirt roads any more. I'm using the 4 wheeler instead Hey it is a savings....no booing!

The nearest grocery store is 60 miles one way. There's a McCoys home improvement store there and a dollar store and that's about it. It's about 215 miles to the next town that is large enough to have a normal variety of stores. Gas is already over $3.00 per gallon here. Once I get the house built I'll be able to stockpile. While living in an RV I'm forced to make more frequent trips to town. Normally I have to go to town for something else anyhow. For the time being all I can do it suck it in and tighten my belt in other areas.

Nearest grocery is 60 miles away????

Goodness, that is a long trip!!! Are you ever able to join up with neighbors, and have them pick stuff up for you???

Living so far out...do you just learn to live without stuff?

I think I would be in huge trouble living so far away!!! It seems that I have to make 27 trips to the hardware store every time I work on a project, LOL.

So does my SO The current dynamic has me supporting both of us. I told him he better start making a list when he goes to town and hold it down to one trip a week....or he will be walking!

It would be nice if we could all do some cooperating as far as running to town. Problem is....us and everyone else I know are building. By the time we get all our stuff there is no room for anyone elses.....and vice versa. We do pretty good for when we have to go to the big city. Normally neighbors will combine trips. LOL....the ladies all get together and have a couple of days away from the guys. It is too far to make the trip there and back in one day so we normally stay the night.

I am going to be creating a yahoo group for my area that will feature bartering and ride shares. Lots of the 'full time' residents out here are retired or on a fixed income. The higher gas prices are hitting them hard.

Wow, that is cool.

Extremely thoughtful of you to start a ride share system!!!!!

I would think that someone would start a little grocery, open part time, if you are that far from the nearest one.

We were chatting about the increased fuel today in a different forum I deal with.

Merrill Lynch has a transportation forum I deal with.

The independent trucker is crying murder right now on fuel costs, EVEN THOUGH MOST SHOW THE HIGHEST EVER NET PROFITS. Not gross but HIGHEST NET profits. They are still trucking and complaining.

The issue was 10 dollar diesel, how it would break the consumers. Most of us said no way they would notice. One gentleman said they would when their lettuce cost them 7 bucks.

So we did the math as the total transportation cost then the owner operator cost.

A load from Santa California to New York City was around 2700 miles. At the average daily rate of 2.25 qt mile that is 6075 bucks or so. It would brokered out for 4400. With Ten dollar diesel the DOE gives us a 1.2 fuel surcharge. that makes that load move at 30300 bucks. UNDER TEN DOLLAR FUEL. The 38800 heads of lettuce would cost them 77 cents a head more.. I remember getting lettuce for 25 cents a head. How much dose a head of lettuce cost right now?

My cost as the guy that owned the truck getting 6.5 miles per gallon. Comes to MAXIMUM profits for the large carriers and the small carrier as they would be paid 11.19 a mile in just fuel surcharge. Think about that for a second. They would be paying 10 bucks a gallon yet getting 11.19 a MILE in fuel surcharge. While paying .77 a cent more a head is a MAJOR thing. It already happened and MOST of us didn't even notice.

When was the last .30-.50 cent a head of lettuce you got? I watched it go to 1.22 a head here in one day. No one had a problem.

I watched milk go from 2.25 a gallon to 3.30 a gallon in a week. No one noticed. They just complained about the gas prices. Gas is cheap in the use form we have. When you watch a dried bag of pasta noodles for from .68 a bag to 1.40 a bag in 4 months you kind catch on. I guess most are to worried about watching gas prices.lol

All I got to say is Stupid Americans. WARS have been started over this exact same thing. I MEXICO right now. They are still having riots due to the shortage of affordable corn tortillas.

We will make sure as Politicians to keep you off subject by enforcing non smokeing bans, trans fat solutions with Yum foods and the great subsities we will give to farmers to grow corn for ethonal. Yet next year we will have to give the BEER BREWERS a subsitie to offset their cost to IMPORT grains we used to grow.

I think wallyworld has a deal now that if you live near one and they don't have a item that can be found in the online catalog, they will ship it to the local store without charging shipping costs. Just go there and ask at customer service for the item, pay for it and boggie on home. If you order something out of the online catalog to be sent to your address, the shipping costs can be outrageous.

Yep, we've got one. It's cheaper to drive the 60 miles! Main problem is...this is a tourist area, and the tourists will pay the higher prices. So the merchants(owners don't live here) don't care how badly the locals get fleeced. Only thing I buy there is milk and bread, and only if I'm totally desperate. I hate to encourage bad behavior. The week before spring break they doubled all the prices...literally. I keep waiting for them to go back down. I always try to shop locally, but this is a matter of principal now.
