Awesome debunking, willow girl!!

The raw vrs. pasteurized "studies" were done (I'm going from memory here) in the early 20's when the common perception was that pasteurization was a way to reprocess decaying raw milk and foist it off on an unsuspecting public.

The comparisions I've seen were of rural children (raw milk drinkers) and inner city ones (pasteurized). New York City and Chicago both had early pasteurization statutes. Obviously, there were many other factors at work besides milk.

The article doesn't say it raises your cholesterol. It says it initiates the process of heart disease. I've read studies where people with LDL (bad) cholesterol levels over 600 live long healthy lives. And lots of people with low cholesterol levels develop heart disease. It isn't the amount of cholesterol in your blood that matters. If your arteries are healthy and smooth inside, the cholesterol doesn't build up and you don't have heart attacks or strokes. But if they have been exposed to a lot of oxidizing elements, they get scarred and the cholesterol gets snagged instead of flowing freely. It builds up until you have a blockage, which causes a heart attack or stroke.

So, back to the taste issue. Texican, you're saying that to make milk uniform, they eliminate all flavors. Uniformly tasteless. By the way, my cow eats alot of different things, including pine needles, and I haven't noticed much difference in flavor.

Ken, I would say few things compare taste-wise in the store. Our green beans are better. Strawberries, no contest. Just had some home-canned peaches - one of the greatest flavors on earth. Store bought are bland. Was disappointed in some locally grown carrots a guy gave us, grown on a large scale. He claimed they were supposed to be great, but wife and I agreed they were bland compared to ours.

Anyway, just reporting what my taste buds say. Maybe others are different. Hopefully I can get used to store milk quickly.

Store bought milk? Ewwwwwww, yuck! Since I've had goats for about 9 years now, the only time I buy cow milk is when the goats dry up. And when the goats dry up, I certainly don't go to the store! I go to the local farmer that lives less than 2 miles from our house and get a gallon of milk out of the bulk tank. Fresh, wholesome, totally RAW milk for $1.50 / gallon.

He doesn't feed his cows hormones to get them to produce. The milk isn't processed or anything - it comes straight from the cow and into the bulk tank.

Now, I know some people here are going to say I'm taking my life into my own hands by drinking this "unsanitary, dirty milk". Well, my reply is I'll take that chance!

The store bought milk is so processed and sanitized that all the good live stuff in milk is killed. You are left with a bland liquid that isn't natural that has who knows WHAT in it!!

Naw, I'm sticking to my cheap, raw milk. For $1.50 / gallon, I'm getting fresh, raw milk. For $1.50 a gallon, the farmer is making more than he does selling it to the big companies. We both end up satisfied with the deal. And I'm happy that I don't have to shell out $3.00 for the bland crap in the stores!

My husband, a self proclaimed 'city boy', born and raised in Lincoln Park Chicago Illinois. He never liked Tomatoes. Until I grew some in our garden. He had never had tomatoes off the vine, still warm from the sunshine.

He tolerated my hobby of keeping animals. Complained bitterly about chores taking up our free time and tying us down to the property.

Eggs, well sure they are better but so what.

Chicken, truthfully it takes a little while to re learn how to cook it.

Store bought mush chicken always turns out consistantly-mediocre.

Free ranged chicken is like cooking an entirely different animal! While he agreed the flavor was better, for a while we ate healthier, more humane free ranged chicken that had the consistancy of cardboard. I finally have perfected the method of cooking it.

But what sold him on this whole raise our own farming thing was

The Fresh Pork! :1pig:

I remember the first time I cooked OUR pork. It was a shoulder roast. I unwrapped itfrom the paper wrapping- it was beautiful. I smelled it, it smelled clean, not off like store bought pork! Couldn't help but slice off two tiny pieces which I quickly pan fried, sprinkled the pieces with just a little salt and

O. M..Goodness.

It was -words fail to describe how delicious it was.
