Try this. I tend to agree with these guys. There is no magic bullet when it comes to lighting. LED's make great flashlights right now. When/if they ever overcome the directional nature of the light they put out they may be the answer.

I work for a large hardware store chain in western NY. If you think they get recycled or checked out you need to rethink that. We put them in a defective area if they blow prematurely. The manufacturers rep comes and counts them for credit, then they hit the dumpster. If you bring them in without a reciept, they just hit the dumpster. Keep in mind the ballasts contain mercury and that powder inside the tube portion is very poisonous.
