marvella, does your thermostat have a blue light on it? If you do not know, just turn the thermostat up for a few minutes an observe after the heat pump starts if a blue light illuminates in a few more minutes. You could have a freon leak and could be running on emergency heat. This does happen. If it is occurring in your case that would be the reason for the high utility bill.

well, there's part of the problem. thing was set over on auto. i guess i'm about half blind. there is a little flame picture that pops up when the heat comes up, but i thought that just means the heat is on. is it something else? there is an emergency setting, that the builders seemed to use. they said meant it would come on if the place ever got below a certain point, so i assume that is the the heat strips coming on?

this place is pretty small and efficient, well- built and insulated. all appliances a new and energy star, i close off unused rooms, all flourescent lights and bulbs... it really should be less.

yep, they level the coal country while choking us to death. we'd be a lot better off if we could meet all our needs with hydro. are you near kingston?

i can't really second guess about a gas furnace now, i made the choice. one thing about the hp, it does contribute to the resale value more than a gas furnace i'd think. i gotta say, the last couple years in the DW, the propane bill was about 400/ mo in the winter.

i just got a "thing" about using a lot of electricity.

I'm on the Holston river near the John Sevier power plant. I'm also near Eastman chemical, it's like living in my own little Bhoepal! Sinus business is great for doctors around here. We've still got the remnants of the nuclear plant they started years ago and never copleted.
