Bonnie,
We haven't had TV since we left Indy and moved to Brown County. Don't miss it. Told the kids if we were going to have animals, we couldn't afford satellite as well, and they are more than happy with the trade-off. We get movies from the library and have a family movie night about once a week. One benefit that DW and I really like is that the kids aren't bombarded with commercials, so they are not always wanting something they saw on TV.

I haven't had TV for at least 20 years. I agree with Frank Zappa:

TV Slime, by Frank Zappa

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I'm the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I'm the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I'm the slime oozin' out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help . . . no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks . . .
Don't touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin' room floor

I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go!

We haven't watched tv for hmm lets see... 13 years. We see it now and again at the inlaws, or get a video from the library on occasion. Thats about it.

Sure don't miss the extra noise and nonsense

We don't have a tv, haven't had one in the house in over 4 years. So, that means no DVD's or VHS tapes either. We've become voracious readers !

reading is something I picked back up after "tuning out" as well. I enjoy a good book better than tv anyway.. Use to be big into fiction, and I do like the occasional novel, but now I'm more likely to read materials dealing with AG, wicca, and the like

Triffin,

I got Dish when the DD moved in....I do enjoy the house flipper channels, and Sunday nights are Law & Order. I have a double Yagi antenna out in the garage, that I intended for use as a Purple Martin roost. However, if it will do the job you say, with the flat screen tv, I am willing to try it. THANKS!

I think we do too much tv watching here. And the shows can be horrible filth that you have to rush to find the button to turn off quickly.

But my neighbor raised her kids with no TV and I have yet to hear the end of it. You would think that she was mother theresa or something the way she always threw in my face that HER kids were raised with no tv.

So, I guess I am saying, it is a good thing to turn off the tv ( her kids are wonderful young adults) but for heavens sake don't be bragging about it like you created world peace. By the way, my kids are wonderful almost adults and they do watch tv on the occasion.

We stopped our Dish Network two months ago, and truthfully, I had withdrawal from Diagnosis Murder for one (I Network - formerly Pax), but it is better now. We save $40 a month, and we really were watching too much tv, we both knew it. We get the basic now, 3 network, 1 fox, and pbs. PBS has some really great shows on there that I did not realize before.
On Saturday nights one of our favs is to pop in a Columbo DVD, or Murder She Wrote. (Why are all the good clean shows gone??? )
