we usually just mow it short . but seed it when the ground is a little soft .then run a roller over it ,but there is a big difference between texas and illinois

I run over the with a drag harrow with the times down to disturb the soil maybe 1/2 inch deep. Then I broadcast the seed and fertilizer and then drag harrow again with the teeth side up to cover the seed hopefully approx 1/4 inch deep. Then hopefully get a nice gentle rain - yeah right it always works that way.

Thanks for the replies. We have fields that have been neglected for at least four years and we want to get them in shape and put them to use. We've bush hogged them some and need to do soil tests. We knew we needed to get the seeds in contact with the soil but weren't sure how to go about it without discing (disking?) it and that seemed like overkill, plus would be expensive to seed that heavily.

Nice gentle rain - I'll make a note
