We're getting low, but we will make it. Early winter was so mild, I think it nearly evened out. I'm not sure how much we use since we cut our own and never measure. Actually, next years wood is already cut in long lengths, and sitting out behind the barn, ready to be cut into pieces and split. I suppose if we got desperate, we could dip into that.

We have used about 28 pickup truck loads (measuring unsplit chunks and logs) out of about 30 this season. This is our first season with an outdoor furnace, and we were less than happy with the lack of efficiency. But, everyone else around here has said that they have burned twice as much wood as they normally would this winter, so I guess I shouldn't feel so terrible about it. The thing about it is that it was really green, newly cut wood. We didn't have a choice but to burn it, though, because we didn't have an aged store going yet. It was all free from where they were cutting trees away from power lines, so we didn't get choice wood for burning anyway. Mostly elm, which pretty much is worthless. The little bit of oak we had, we tried to save for the really cold days. If it wasn't so green, I think we would have done a lot better, but what can you do?

It's going to be a very long summer, as we are going to have to cut our own this time, and resources are going to be tight as to where we can go to get it. Thank goodness we have a hydraulic splitter, or I think we would just give it up and go back to a high electric bill.
