Yes, we had them last year after I put up one of those aluminum houses for them. Dang, are those things expensive or what? Anyhow, now that I have hogs in the pen nearest the martin house I'm anxious to see if they return this year. My place is wide open for the most part and we have numerous large stock tanks (ponds) in the neighborhood, so it's ideal martin habitat.

I left my house up all year and haven't had any "invaders". Most people in my neck of the woods just leave 'em up year round.

Barn swallows and purple martins are not the same bird! Swallows will build in various places. According to the purple martin association there has never been a verified nesting of the purple martin in a natural setting(non man made) . Martins were provided with housing by american indians so far back that the martins have lost the ability to use anything other than housing provided by man.

Paul, scroll down further on the link. They should be up in the Cheese state in April. Maybe you'll see one. Someone in KY saw one 2 days ago.
Click on last years sightings, and it'll show all the states.

I will have to watch allot closer for the darker purple color. I love my Barn Swallows too, I opened the door to the little building yesterday, hopefully in a couple weeks they'll be here. I don't have any houses for the Martins. The Barn Swallows call this home all summer, so I wouldn't want to upset them.

They are back at my house here in lower Alabama. I just love to listen to them early in the morning.

I purchased the plastic house variety (haven't used one before, metal was the last one I had.) it was on sale at the local MFA $22.99 for my MIL and will set it up this weekend for her.

Martins are cousins to Swallows.
