West Virginia. Rambler-The reason I remove the corn stalks is because I use a 5 foot rotary till on my tractor. I can go pretty quickly through the field with the tiller and it works up real nice-I am afraid it won't work so well with the corn stalks on the ground. The corn wraps around those tines.... I then broadcast the wheat and harrow in wheat seed. I agree, the wheat makes a good cover crop (green manure) that's why we plant. I also put Triple 19 on in spring. This coming fall I am going to brush hog the stalks, side rake, then bale. I may have to yell back at you all when that time comes, I've never baled corn just hay. Thanks to everyone for there help!

Sounds like a working plan to me Dianne.

However, if all you will to do with the wheat is use it for green manure, you could sow winter rye in the spring when you plant the corn. The rye will not go to seed until the following spring. When it gets about 6 inches tall it will go dormat and remain that size the rest of the year. It makes a thick ground cover that will hold down most weeds. It could be grazed stalks and all for good late fall pasture then plowed under in the spring when it gets ready to head out just before corn planting time.
