The taste of dog food

I wonder what dog food taste like? Some of it smells pretty tasty.

dog food

You got way toooo much time on your hands.

In the 50 aand 60's my brother [then little] ate Purina Dog Food as a snack.
The doctor said there were a lot worse things that he could be eating.

Most dog food is mainly corn-------------with chicken byproducts and it them BYPRODUCTS you gotta look out for-----------feathers, guts, poop!

freegal 02/22/07 06:25 AM

Long ago, when I was very young, our dog had dry food shaped like the erasers on pencils. It smelled so good and my siblings & I thought it was tasty, too.

I find this funny, because at one point or another, Ive tasted everything my pets eat. Dog food tends to have a stale cracker/chemical aftertaste. The crappier the food, the worse it is. You get what you pay for. Put a handfull in a glass of water and let it sit for a few hours. Check out the film that floats to the top of the water. That is what you are tasting. If the food swells alot, it is pretty high on the crappiness scale.

I remember one time I was in a pet supplies plus with my then boyfriend. We were in line and they had that container of free treats to give to any dog someone brought in, so I grabbed the 'all new' beggin strip. I wanted to know if it really tasted like bacon, so I took a quiet bite, and my bf started yelling in line about how nasty I was and how embarrased he was. I have always laughed years later, because he blamed me for causing a scene. :rotfl:

I should be so ashamed!

Anyhow, they dont taste like bacon, they taste like hard playdoh that smells like bacon.

titansrunfarm 02/22/07 06:46 AM

My abusive drunk ex husband could tell ya... ;)

Quit "wondering" and take a bite, that's the best way to find out, first hand experience... :)

My first ex-husband loved those Milkbone dog biscuits. But then...

A - How do you know what hard playdough tastes like? LOL

pancho 02/22/07 07:46 AM

I know the canned dog food does not taste as good as it smells.

I had a friend who worked in a place where they made cat food. It was a common practice for the workers to get a bowl of the cat food and use it as a snack at break time. He said some tasted better than others but almost all of it was good on a cracker.

Old John 02/22/07 08:20 AM

Had an old Friend once......

He was a "drinker".........
And every time he'd lay out late, he'd come Home, Fussin' & want DSW to
fix him somthing to eat.
More'n once she'd fry up some Gaines burgers, put 'em on a bun
with some catsup onions & lettuce, and she'd fry him some poptatoes
to go with them.
Couple of times she'd make 'em up into hash for him, with some hash-brown potatoes. He had Eggs & Hash. Catsup covers a multitude of flavors, hunnh?

As far as I know he never found out. A couple of his Buddies did though,
by way of her bragging to her girlfriends.
OBTW, They are still together. And He's still a "drinker".
Go figure.

shelljo 02/22/07 10:09 AM

I can't remember what dry dog food tastes like, but I used to snack on it when I was little. It was closer to go to the shed for dogfood than to go to the house!

At the college where I work, we have a Vet Tech program. One of the first things the kids have to do is to eat a handful of dog food. If they can't handle that, then they probably won't be able to handle any of the more disgusting lab assignments!

Of course, they get Science Diet donated, so I'm sure it's better tasting than the "cheap" stuff.

danoon 02/22/07 10:35 AM

Grandpa once ate a sandwich of what he later found out was cat food.. said it was pretty good.

That's as funny as my Dad using flea soap to bathe with.

We had given the dog a bath but while cleaning up the bathroom later, we forgot the soap and Dad used it. We never told him.......... :)

"Special Kitty" here in Missouri has a tuna that really looks like the stuff that you get in tuna cans (except darker). I have often thought that if times got really tough I might give it a whirl. It would be hard to bring myself to eat the other stuff though.

I hope they didn't use the version of Science Diet that is for overweight dogs. One of the ingredients in it is "peanut hulls" YUM!

That is an obvious cut and paste.

That recognized, having had a tax practice from 1968 to 1999, I realize some people need to pass SOMETHING on to heirs. It's amazing what people will do to pass on a $$$ or two. What isn't amazing, any more, is watching the heirs, will or not.

And I'm betting that he never got FLEAS either?!!! :goodjob:

I once worked with a guy that spent 20 years working in a Purina plant. He said they tasted the dog food all the time as a quality check. According to him, the place was as clean as any human food factory, and the ingredients were ok to eat as well.

My sister once fed canned food (Twin Pet) to our German Shepherd and liked the spoon before she realized what she was doing.

RoseGarden 02/22/07 12:30 PM

Cut and paste or not, it's pretty darn funny! I might try that one out myself sometime if the opportunity ever presents itself.

I remember we breifly lived in a small town where there was a dog food factory. The smell that place gave off when they were cooking it, or whatever they do to it, was horrible. It smelled like a wet dog only worse.

GrannyG 02/22/07 12:40 PM

Just "woof" some down and let us know. LOL. Bet it is gritty !

Oggie 02/22/07 12:46 PM

I asked our dog.

She said that, depending on the brand, it tastes a little better than cat poop found in the yard (which should be saved for rolling in, anyway), but not as good as a dead animal she might find in the field after it's been in the hot sun for a few days.

Of course, she also pointed out that everything tastes markedly better after it's been thrown up on the kitchen floor and woofed down a second time.

Quit. . . . next. here we fave people wpmt uppc fave hello.

Ought ! Your turn.

Idahoe 02/22/07 05:13 PM

It always needs salt. Try lemon pepper with lamb and rice, and any sort of chicken dog food tastes better with garlic powder or fresh if you have it.

hunter63 02/23/07 09:03 AM

Check in with the local "Seniors Center", find out which day is "Alpo Delight day".

O.K this is a joke, but I heard it some where and couldn't resist.

And that can of Special Kitty costs MORE than the can of chunk light tuna.

I never understand stories of old/poor people eating dog food because they cant afford real food. There are plenty of things to buy that are cheaper than those cans of dog and cat food!

jd4020 02/23/07 12:38 PM

Our son got into the dog food when he was really little. Didn't seem to hurt him only his diaper smelled like dog doo.
It's not something I would want to even taste, because I found out at the locker, that a truck comes around to lockers and picks up the offal, takes it to pet food plants and cooks it down. The reason I know this is they wanted me to come back and pick up the leftovers of my goat I took in to be butchered and they won't take sheep and goat leftovers; they told me whatever is in the goat and sheep offal won't cook to high enough degree to kill whatever's in it.
I won't buy canned cat food anymore. I usually feed dry but like to have a few cans on hand for ailing critters. I had a cat that was in pretty bad shape and was nursing her back to health. The canned food I had, looked like little pink, rubbery erasers and the broth smelled even worse. For the same amount of money as some of the so called "better" canned food I just bought tuna in oil, mackeral and the cheaper salmon. (at Aldis' the salmon sells for $1.29 and one can makes about four feedings) She picked up better and a lot quicker after giving her the fish.
Been thinking about trying to make my own pet food for a while.

vicker 02/24/07 07:28 AM

When I was about 8 yo I was staying with my grandma, here in WV one summer. She ran out of dog food and baked the dogs a cake (un-beknownst to me). She made it with cow food, table scraps and what not. After she had baked it, she left it on the counter to cool. I had been out playig and followed my nose to it when I came in. It tasted as good as it smelled :D
My great grandpa always called me "Poodle" after that story got out
PS The dry is deffinatly better than the canned. :D

Believe it or not, chicken feathers are a good source of protein and not too unreasonable in price either. However, they are not digestable without processing. When you extrude them to make the protein available guess what they are going to smell like?
