Got another 12 gallons of sap yesterday, made 2 cups of syrup. Total for year so far is 5 cups. It just isn't happening yet here in my part of the country.

i drained my 2 small lines today and collected 3 gallons. i probably have more on the hill. if i collect 5 or more gallons, i may boil it. otherwise, i will dump it i guess. 3 days of 70 degree weather in the middle of the run kinda stinks. the weather will return to seasonal temps in two days, but will the buds break and spoil the sap? who knows? i may be finished with only 2 and a half gallons of syrup from 40 taps. the prolonged cold weather delayed my run as the buds break early in my zone, and the high temps could finish it early.

PA west of gettysburg. i am in zone 6b. there are patches of 6a very nearby, and a spur of zone of 7a is only a few miles away over the ridge.
i actually had sap running in december and january on the red maples when i experimented last year. next year i will tap earlier if the weather is more seasonal.

the weather here is pretty bad for sap to run. The temperature spread isnt enough. It is suppose to freeze at nigh all this week, but it isnt suppose to get much above 35 during the day. I dontknow how much its going to run. Im almost done tapping. I think I can finish it up by friday night. I thought the weather channel said yesterday that ti was suppose to be 40 today, but the local radio said it wasnt suppose to get above 30.
IM fearfull that we might not get the temperature differential that we need. If I had vaccume it wouldnt matter, but that costs $3000. A couple years ago the weather warmed to above freezing for a week, then froze for a week, then warmed up, and stayed warm right into spring, and summer. All we had was 2 3 day runs. Im fearfull that we might get something like that this year.
Anyway, I have a collection tank out there, and all the tubing is hooked together, and going into the tank. We'll see.
To everyone who has made syrup: Good job!
Bob, how much have you made?

i did boil down 5 gallons indoors which produced 2.5 half pint canning jars of the most delicious caramel tasting syrup ive ever tasted

I have a large stainless double sink I was thinking about converting into a boiling pan. It looks like if I can get the drains plugged or a tap hooked to them somehow so I can drain the syrup when it's done boiling it'll be a nice boil pan. I am worried that it might be too thin. What do you think? This is my first year trying to make syrup so I really have no idea what I am doing besides what I've read and I don't want to spend very much on equipment this year.

i thought about doing the same thing. i ended up buying a pan though. if i had used the sink idea, i would have had someone tig weld the drain holes shut. you probably have plumbers putty in the drain hardware that should be removed too.

My pan was a Godsend. I got the pan for free. It had a drain hole in the one end on the bottom. I took it to the welder, he covered the hole, and moved the drain to the side and I put on a valve. It was $30.00 for the welding.
I figure with everything I've bought in the past two years my syrup costs about 100.00 per gallon. LOL. But that will go down drastically as the years go by.
