Boiled 40 gallons of sap and got 1/2 gallon and a pint of syrup. Also collected 30 more gallons of sap to boil Monday along with whatever we get on Sunday which ought to be another good day.

Still making syrup!! Made 3/4 gallon today. But it may end right here.....maybe some sap the next 2 days but after that the lows are only 36 to 38. I keep reminding myself that it is April 9th already!!

Now you're just rubbing it in.

We had a real cold snap, and I noticed today a couple of the hole were bleeding. No taps, cause I pulled them over two weeks ago when the silver maples started to flower. It's been a crazy year. Even the trees are mixed up.

Im thinking Im going to buy a good vacume pump for my tubing next spring. I was ging to buy a Reverse Osmosis, but I figure getting enugh sap should be my first priority. I can always sell sap if I get to much, but an R.O. wont do me any good if I dont have any sap.

Sap started running again Sunday after 6 days of nothing to speck of. was very cold, Got 2 gallions of syrup. Got a good snow bank around most of the trees. Got 30 gallions to boil down today, no budding yet, may have another 3 weeks yet with this cold spring. Good syrup with a great taste this year. I love this stuff!!!

Sue, I agree with the great taste remark. I'm expecting that tomorrow will be my last chance at sap in my part of Maine. I'm hoping to get some sap to boil as I have to take apart my little make shift sugar shack so I plan on cutting up the boards and using it for the fire as we boil. I have to have all my stuff off the land by Friday as we sold the land are supposed to close Friday. It's been a great year and figured out many things thanks to this thread and hoping to take this with us to our homestead.

Well, it was a sad day at ripcat-ranch. Our last day of boiling. We boiled 24 gallons and got a quart and a pint of syrup. We took down our little sugar shack while we boiled. We will pull the taps in the morning and go sign the closing papers on the land in the afternoon.
It was a good year as we ended up with 7 1/2 gallons of syrup. We averaged 60 gallons of sap to 1 of syrup. |
We spent all last week, and most of the day saturday retapping the trees that are tubed. We got some great freeze/thaw temps this weekend, and lots of sap. I made 15 gallons this weekend, but it has an off flavor. IM going to mix it with good syrup. The sap is still running well, but it boils weird. It foams really bad. I have about 800 gallons of sap that Im going to dump. I made about 38 gallons of syrup total. Im going to buy a bunch of syrup.
It's been a long season. 5 weeks. Im pretty tired. Im going to take an eveing off, then start cleaning up. Im done for this year. Congratulation to everyone who made plenty of good syrup! |
