I see teens come into the library every day in winter with no hats, bare legs, hoodies without coats over them, etc.. It's all I can do not to grab my own scarf and wrap it around them when they go to leave! I'm the mother who shrieks, "where is your hat?!"..."Mom, I have my hood up."..."I don't care, you need a HAT!...How many layers are you wearing?"

they closed school today for us i had -20 they are saying windchill in -34 range
i still had to go to work and even though my oldest 5 had no school today they still had to come in with my wife and i to spend the day at grandma's

i can see why they cancel school most of the kids are to stupid to wear a hat.

but seriosly one of my wifes co-workers was telling her that her son in in highshool in madison and they have a shortage of lockers so they have them assinged 3 to a locker there is no room for a coat much less hat gloves boots and bibs that and running all that extra stuff throught the metal detectors would be a huge backup.

when i was in middle school i talked to the principal about a place to store my boots and bibs they had an extra locker that had a pipe running thru it and it was mine to store boots and bibs

at my daughters school they have mats for the boots next to their classroom door and the older kids place them in front of their lockers but it is a catholic school and there is appaerently not the theft issue there is in public
wouldn't want to be in bad with sister c
that and all the kids are requires to have hat gloves bibs coat boots and an extra change of cloths an i tell you that is a great idea every kid should have an extra change of cloths in there locker.

as for that every adult should carry an extra change of cloths in thier car/truck
just put it in a 2 gallon zipplock back, never know when a dry pair of socks would be handy or when you will spill that coffee.

Nice and sunshiney... up to 2F. Kids were just out playing, loving it.

Our school district never calls off school, so they are enjoying it while they can.

I lived in N. Mt. for a long time, can really feel for you folks. However, here in sunny Northern NV, we are looking for a high of 65 today. Very unusual. Two years ago, we had 8 feet of snow. Don't miss it a bit tho. Really odd weather patterns.

We are at 66 right now so it's just a tad bit chilly here. :-) Not to worry, tomorrow could get up to 72. But I can sure tell you that this is one former Ohioian that's really happy to be living in Texas. :-) My brother is the captain of Ashland, OH fire dept. Sure hope they are out having to fight any fires.

-30ºF this morning (air temp)...not sure what the wind chill was, if any. Schools are still open. I guess the kids in Ohio aren't quite as tough as Minnesota kids, dontchaknow.

They had school here today, but two-hour late start. My boys said they never enjoyed snow days because there was always a full day of work waiting for them -- usually quite a bit of shoveling out gates and doors and bunks.

I remember times when they started two hours late and got let out two hours early, but the school district could call that a day of school for legal purchases.

In country school, nooone lived much more than 3-4 miles from the school, but I can remember being at school during the Armistice Day blizzard in 1940 and Dad came and got us with his Model A truck.

When I was in high school, I stayed home from the junior class picnic to help Dad plant corn. This was May 28, 1947. It started snowing later in the morning, and by noon, Dad had to stop planting because he couldn't see the mark from the planter marker. It ended up snowing a bit over 8" that day.

Those model A's were actually quite amazing on what they could go through.

Of course if you saw how old the busses in our district are, you might understand it. They had a few gel up the other night on the way to the basketball game. And it was 15 degrees warmer.

I'm pretty sure school is cancelled around here. I didn't pay much attention,as I have no kiddies. The weatherman said it could go below zero tonight, and I'm not ashamed to admit that the cold is getting to me! I only stay outside as long as I have to,and then I'm back inside where it's warm

My neighbor had -24 in his garage last night and his battery froze up in his truck. My two vehicles sat outside and started fine, but the school district was 2 hours late. I saw on the news from Minneapolis that one big transportation company that contracts to the schools couldn't get all their buses started, that's why many schools were closed. Wasn't all because of the cold, it was lack of transportation.
