my dad drove for over 50 yrs. when he retired he kept his cdl and worked for local dealerships picking up and delivering trucks between dealerships and to customers. he averaged around 15,000 a year and he worked maybe twice a month. gone no more than 3 days(canada run). hi liked small family oriented companies.

I drive local. I haul grain, not for farmers but from elevators to one of the several mills in our area. If this ethenol thing gets going there will be more of this type of work. I loved it till I lost my wife last August and then it became just another job. But just living is work now. We felt this was the perfect job. I am a minister of a small church. I have to suplement my income and I took this job as a part time job. Spring, summer and fall are the busiest times and winter is really slow. We felt it was the perfect job because my busy times were her slack times and visa-versa. We would always have a good suplemental income. I drove for two months before she suddenly past away and now I have to really watch things during the off months. The nice thing about this job is I am home every evning and weekends and I do like to drive. The down side, beside my lack of desire to do anything right now, would be what every single parent deals with when you have a child who is home from school while you are still at work. I work for some great people who are very considerate about my schedual and needs as far as my single parenting and ministry go.

My brother and sister-in-law both have their CDL. They both have driven trash trucks and now drive cement trucks and pour cement. Earnings are good and there is a lot of overtime in the summer, but they are home every night. We are in Kansas and in this area there are a lot of jobs for someone with a CDL.

DH drives OTR. One of the reasons we are trying to sell and move is to get us to the point he can be home more. Right now he averages 100 days a year home, we make less than some are saying here, but we can live on it fine & we get to see him more. To us this is worth it. We homeschool so that when he is home the kids are here to see dad. They also ride with him some. If we can pull this sale off & get into a place with little or no payment, he can do enough local or short haul (out one day, home the next) that we can see more of him.

He has been driving since he was 18. He always has a job, and keeps his record spotless so that he can continue. If you decide to get into driving, remember your license is your living, don't break the rules, either while on the job or off. Your buddy may be able to drink and drive or push the speed limit and get a fine, if you do it, you are out of work. Educate yourself on the trucking business, don't just drive & hope someone else is keeping track of YOUR paperwork. A friends ds just got pulled over in KY doing 5 mph over the speed limit. His boss had told him all the paperwork was in the cab & he didn't need a cdl. He did, the paperwork wasn't there and he sat beside the road for hours while his boss found someone to drive the truck home legally. Guess who is liable for the fines?

for those of us that are down under is a CDL a commercial drivers licence?
if it is, down here in OZ we have several variant depending what type of rig you drive.
personnaly i have a articulated lisence (semi's) and a heavy rigid. about 10 ton (or 25 ft flat bed)
I have driven small buses ( upto 20 passenger) any more people and you need a first aid certificate and haven't had the need or the time to get it and never wanted to be put in a position or want the responsiblity to have to use it.

the thing here is the insurance ( A must to have ) the older you are and the more experience the cheaper. an 18 year old forget, it not worth your while.
