Dang, I can't believe you all tried to call me! How thoughtful!
That number is not good anymore. I still have one year on the contract, so I can't take it with me. I was going to change the voicemail to say my new number, just as soon as I get one. Sorry.

I heard that ALIENS appear as mutant deer sometimes.
WAIT.
How do we know that this is the REAL Jena??? This could be an "Invasion of the HT Snatchers" type thing you know.

Jena, the critter knawing at your back door was most likely just a possom. They like to chew up stuff and explore for food.
We had a loud chewing noise outside our bedroom window one summer night.
We would go out there with flashlights and find nothing.
Get back in bed and it would start all over again.
Finally found a hole in a large plastic trash can lid. Down inside was a little mouse trapped in there. Knawing on the inside trying to get back out.
The trash can was mostly empty and the sound was echoing and sounding like a big animal when it was just a little mouse.

Two pounds of hamburger meat and about eight twenty miligram valium mixed into it and you will find it passed out close by. Works every time.

Now, I was not living there but years ago my mother heard noises and it bugged her. It was in the Fall. I guess it happened a few nights but mom is tough. She did own up to it sounding "maybe" like someone/thing was trying to get into the house. Now, this is a hugh house and from her living area she could switch on the lights surrounding the place. (Yes, I grew up and learned to light up the area like an air strip-never thought it was "bad" till reading about city folks in the country) When she would turn on the light and head down there was never anything there.
Well, one night she come home and the window in one of the offices by the conference hall was broken in. It was a rainy and windy night. Now that did scare her and she did call the cops.
End result. was the cop noticed hair and since he was hunter he recogned it as deer. mom said that since she left the lights on timers that when the lights in the room was on and the outside light in that area was off that the deer could see the wall filled with plants and that it might have invited the deer to try and get it Thus the sounds and one night he just tried to had and broke the window. There were prints in the mud from what I remember of the story. I'll vote for the deer. Mom was glad that the cop explained to her what he thought had happened.

Yikes!
Gosh after reading this thread I got the eebie jeebies lol! We have had a few strange things happen out here too but never have figured out what it was. A neighbor across the road from us has a few hundred acres and says he has about 30 coyotes out there, we hear them yapping sometimes at night, I'm praying they don't come over this way, about a year ago something attacked our pit bull and almost bit her ear off. She is extremely docile so I'm not sure what would want to mess with her . Scary part is our yard is chain link fenced all the way around, so I don't like to go out into the yard after dark anymore. Good Luck and I hope it's just the deer out there and that it sets your mind at ease

Ladybug, I was reading once about a guy that had a 6' chain link fence with a roller bar on top. That way when the coyotes tried to get over the fence, they would jump to the top and the roller bar would turn so they couldn't "pull" themselves over the top.
Where I live, no one lets dogs run loose or leaves them out unconfined at night. Everyone says "coyotes will get them". May or may not be true, but it does make for no loose dogs in the area.

Hey Jena
Glad to hear everything is ok there.. we really were kinda worried about you.
Post any updates of things that go bump in the night.. we have a few spooky stories also.
I like your web site. It looks like you have a nice brood of youngins there and a great looking farm. It looks like a lot to handle and hold down a job too.

I don't have that farm anymore. Long story, but I got ripped off and it's all gone.

Jena - glad you are ok. Are you salting your steps for ice? That might be drawing deer or other animals nearby. What type of dog do you have outside? My dogs have always gone NUTS for bears, wolves, foxes, coyotes, people, etc. They will usually bark and cause a huge ruckus until the animal gets REALLY close and then they growl and pace so loud they can be heard inside the house. They are in a protected kennel with insulated dog houses but I still worry about them - especially when they continually alarm to warn me. For frequent visitors - like moose - they have distinct barks but I still always check.
If your dog with puppies is already in heat again, she could be attracting other neighborhood dogs with her scent.
Anyway, PLEASE do not go outdoors shooting blindly. It's one thing to protect yourself but quite another to just shoot into the dark. Every state & county has different laws on protecting oneself and one's property so please be informed and follow them. What if you shoot a person or an endangered species or even your own pet?
It is also often illegal to spotlight animals and shoot them or to hunt with guns after dark.
Please also do not feed them or bait them with anything without at least first checking the laws. It is best to leave these things to the experts. Call your local animal control or as someone else said your DNR, US Fish & Wildlife, or even the non-emergency line of your police to ask for a referral to the appropriate folks. Many times they will come out and assess the situation, look at tracks, give you pointers for food storage and minimizing attractions, etc. and sometimes set up a live trap and then come out to deal with whatever is caught when you call them. This is usually free.
Good luck and I'm glad you're safe.

Hee hee - here is my freaky story of things that go bump in the night!
We had just purchased a place in a fairly rural area. The property included almost 50 acres, most heavily wooded. The house sat back a ways from any neighbor, down at the end of a low-traffic cul-de-sac. The first night in the new house my husband had to go out to field season so we were rushing around trying to move in. We had agreed to let the sellers camp out on some of the land for a couple of weeks while they got their stuff together for a move south and while we were moving in they warned us about a couple of bears that had been in the area dusting up the neighbors a bit. With horses and dogs around, we were a little concerned about bears bothering the animals and possibly being attracted to the manure and feed. It wasn't a big deal, but it was something to think about. So that night I drove my husband to the airport and came home alone. This was a night when the sellers had a trip planned for the weekend away so they were also gone.
Everything was quiet and when I finally went to bed it was still fairly light (thank goodness for black-out shades!). A little while later I was awakened by a VERY LOUD rattling that sounded like something trying to get into the house! I grabbed the phone (which only had emergency 911 service at the time) and headed out of the bedroom. Cautiously I peered around the inside of the house, glancing out the windows to see if a bear might be outside trying to get in. Nothing visible from the second floor so I very carefully headed downstairs to the daylight basement...
The doors were all closed down there to keep the cats out of the new bedrooms until we had them sorted and arranged. Carefully I opened each door and examined the rooms and looked out their windows. The front bedroom was brighter since it had no blinds but it was scary since I thought I might open the door to a bear or a bear looking through the window!
I got all the way through the house and garage and finally got brave enough to go out on the second-story deck to have a look at the back yard and west side of the property. Nothing. No signs of anything out there at all. No sounds of anything running through the woods either. I made a lot of noise and hollered a bit to reassure myself and scare off whatever or whomever it might have been.
The next day I went around the house and still saw no signs of any disturbance.
This went on for a few days.
Then one night I figured it out. And boy did I feel foolishly jumpy! It turned out that one of my cats was mad that the downstairs bedroom doors were closed and he was trying to get IN the bedroom from the hall. This particular door was right underneath my bed and was just a little loose on its frame so rattled easily with just a little coaxing. I figured out that my cat was shoving his paw into the space under the door and yanking on the door trying to open it (even if he could work the knob above, he would have had to push it open, silly cat!). This made it rattle loudly as he pulled and pulled and tried to work it open.
Little turd.
Still have that cat too - he's sitting here next to me as I type this out and chuckle to myself about it.
