It sounds like coyotes to me. They can get pretty lanky looking and are fearless when it comes to getting some food. They are very sly and creative too.

hmm. Remeber when you went on elementary field trip and you used the "buddy" system...I think we need one here for cases such as this...?? Each person teams up with another local to get other contact info incase of emergency...or weird mystery drama with a worrisome gap in updates?...just thinkin.

I wish she'd check back in. I'm a bit worried. That animal sounds really creepy. What does the New Jersy Devil look like?

At about the same time that SteveD posted, I typed the exact same reply, but then decided not to post.

When I saw Ladycat quote the above, I thought that I'd submitted it after all, and that she'd attributed the quote to the wrong guy.

I would vote for wolves here? And dropping them with a rifle or shotgun. You can not let wild critters take over the yard like that. Jena never said what type of dog she has.

I would get a high spot so I can watch the yard and kill them asap.

p.s if the yard dog is scared bring him in for the time being.

Is she in an area where there were ice storms?
Perhaps a lack of electricity is the reason she's not posting.

This remins me of the time my DD was 22 and traveling alone.
She called home one night from Texas and said "This is the scariest town I've ever been in".

And then we didn't hear from her for NINE days.
Ended up she had gotten a really good deal on a beach front room for a week --- and was lounging in the sun and reading several books!

The worst part of it being that a young girl was found murdered near us during that time---------and this Mom and Dad were VERY WORRIED about where our girl was.

Come on Jena! Call HOMEsteading Today NOW!
