Thank you for the helpful answers to my questions. It appears that homesteaders *can* still go away for a few days with a little help from friends/family/neighbors/paid help. I think we'll keep the RV, we do so love to go camping, and it's somewhat of a security blanket as alternate accomodation. Plus extra accomodation for visitors/family. Plus for the country fair as DocM mentioned

We have no family in this country, so we'd have to rely on friends or paid help, and obviously it will take a while before we can even dream of going anywhere, but we'll get there eventually. Since we want to keep livestock to be as self-sufficient as possible (poultry, meat rabbits, goats, bees, and maybe further down maybe some other animals and not all right off the bat of course! ) they would be part of our livelihood and it will take time to build up enough trust to put that into someone else's care.

Maybe you better think about the "Homesteading lifestyle", before you spend your money, it isn't just for a couple of weeks, it life!
I'm not sure if you mean that we're currently "on vacation" living as we are now, or if one is "on vacation" when homesteading?

What part of my original post indicated that we have not thought long and hard about the "homesteading lifestyle"? Hubby and I are both from farming backgrounds (hubby moreso than myself) and two of my brother-in-laws have cattle farms, so we know the amount of dedication and work involved. It's a lifestyle we have desired since we can remember, and we're finally making the move to realize our dreams. We've done a huge amount of research, and even know what a chicken tractor is and how to build one. Sorry, couldn't resist .

when we have to go away I get one of the older dd's friends to come by and feed and let the dog out. we'll be doing the beach thing come September with all of dh's family. I'll have to have someone tend to the chickens then too. A day or two and I could just put extra feed out....a week and it'd be all gone plus hopefully there will be eggs to be gathered.

We swap with the neighbors for longer trips and for quick weekends or overnighters (we have indoor dogs) we usually hire a high school kid from Church. We pay them 20 bucks a day which is the same as paying the kennel for one dog. We did have an RV but got rid of it as we used it less and less. We made our homestead more like a vacation spot, pool, hot tub, sauna etc etc, so we vacation here. But for those times we do have we have a tent. More fun anyway I think!

I must agree, homesteading is a lifestyle. But there are times you have to leave (death of a family member, etc.) thank goodness for the kids down the road, they always need money. But I have also used farm sitters. They come out twice a day and feed the animals. I would check with the local vet or feed store, to see if there is one around. I do board the dogs, if I can't take them with us. As for the RV, I'm glad you decided to keep it. We lose power more often than city folk, our RV has a gas stove, at least we can have dinner.
