How is your mom doing after the surgery? Hope everthing went well.

That railing looks great. I'm sure your parents will appreciate the work you put into them.

Bad surgery and a long recovery time (3 Months)...But the rail allows her to get into her favorite chair and watch TV...so it was worth it.

She's getting better...thanks for asking!

Arrow Thanks

I know everyone has their favorite, but I've stained a lot of cabinets and other wood-work.

My favorite stain is showing in the pics. It's olympic gel stain in the "Colonial Oak" shade.

I've used gallons of this stain and it always impresses me with its ease of application and results.

I only ever put on 1 coat...I'm sure 2-3 would darken it some, but I like the lighter look, because it seems to really raise the woodgrain.

Anyway, that's JMHO.

Great job! Thanks for sharing the pictures!

My only concern would be that you may need to add a third spindle on each stair to make sure there is not more than 4" space between any spindle to meet general life/safety codes.

I dunno about codes, but I found pics that showed any number of balusters and any sizes of spaces.

I found plans that showed rails with 1, 2 or 3 balusters per tread.

I chose to do 2 per tread because the starter newal was nothched to stand on the bottom tread, and the spacing looked better with only 2.

As far as safety, more balusters don't make a rail more sturdy. The lateral stability comes from the newal post and the wall anchor.

I guess a kid could get it's head hung in the gap, but it ain't likely...

Anyway, this was my first (probably only) stab at it, and Mom and Dad seem pleased.

Yeah, the spindles aren't to make the rail sturdy AT ALL - no matter the #. It is only to close the space. 4" max is the standardized max. space for life/safety codes so when they resell they may run into that (can't tell for sure - is the space bigger than 4" between the spindles?). Anyway, that's the only code that was of any concern to us on our stairs - we like the look of 2 spindles better too but we had to go with 3. Cost us more money to do too. Grrrr...
