over a year ago , a wolf crossed the road in front of my car. I had to slam on the brakes. Wasn't a coyote, it was bigger than my german shepard. It's ears & muzzle looked like wolf. Called some wolf people, was told, 'no wolves in maine'. Guess when they come to the border, they turn back . . . .
It could have been a dog wolf hybrid. I also read that in the 90s, a hunter killed what he thought was a coyote. After he shot it, he noticed it didn't look lke a coyote. DNA tests showed it had mixed wolf & coyote blood.
When that animal ran out of the woods right in front of my car, I slammed the brakes on & turned to my kids in the back of the car. 'did you see that?' I asked breathlessly. 'see what?' they both said. . .

moonwolf - on the brush wolf - interesting.

In Alaska, as long as you follow the rules, it is perfectly legal to trap wolves (and I think shoot them too). Although their pelts still bring a high price, it's hard to bring oneself to do this with such a rare animal (they really aren't "rare", we just "rarely see them).
