Cool I'm waiting...

LamiPub had a question I wanted to ask - detergent prices are amazingly high - what is the "best" all around detergent cost and effective. How about the hugh buckets at Sam's?
Do't mean to hi-jack but the question works with this thread.

Just my husband and I do about 4 loads a week but most of my husband's clothes NEED to be washed every time he wears them. I don't mind that he smells like BBQ when he gets home, but I'd like him to smell like clean clothes some of the time at least.

Actually the secret is to have a lot of underwear so when you do wash it's a large efficient load.

4 people and 2 large dogs. Average 5-6 loads a week.

I think a lot of it has to do with washer capacity too. They differ even amongst the top loading ones. We can easily do 1 1/2 of our normal load in my in-laws top loading washer.

9 people with 7 children - 1 bedwetter on occasion - 2 others in pullups.

On an average week 3 loads everyday but Sunday - none of the 5 little ones wear the same jammies more than 1 day - add into that 5 are boys...

Seven people here. Four teens, two dogs and three cats. We do between 10-12 loads a week. I have an HE, front loader also and absolutely LOVE it. Water is a HUGE issue here in southern Colorado so it really saves a lot of water.

I do at least 4 loads a week for the 2 of us. Right now with all the rain, AND mud, I put the rugs and dogs beds on the clothesline for Mother Nature to wash. They will get a soap bath when the rain lets up. I hate to put too much in the septic system with all the wet ground. I usually put a load of whites and towels in after the evening bath and figure the system has all night to drain out some. Then the next morning if it is nice, some go on the clothsline and some the dryer. (Nothing is dry around here now but it beats the terrible ice storms the West is having.)

LamiPub,

We have 6 in our family and do 7-10 loads of laundry per week. We use a detergent called SA8 and a 6.6 lb box lasts us about 9 months or longer. We are still working on the box we opened in early June! PM me if you want to know how to get it.

Beeman - I guess I've been foiled again.

For detergent: My experience with both grimy restaurant stuff and dirty outdoor stuff has been that using a bit of detergent on stains and then soaking everything before you wash it requires less detergent. When I do this, I'm comfortable putting up to half of the amount of "required" detergent in the load and my clothes still come out clean.

If the "laundry smell" isn't strong enough for your tastes, put some dryer sheets in your drawers. (Dresser drawers, not pants drawers)

2 people: 4 loads a week. More in the summer when we are gardening, mowing, just plain getting down and dirty. I'm going to put up a clothesline this coming summer to save on dryer cost when DH builds a deck off the kitchen/laundry area.

I do 6-8 loads a week and love our front loader machine. We had one before in our old house and hubby said they are a dream to work on if needed - in that case a hair scrunchy had gotten to the drain pipe.

The one that we has weighs the clothes i believe so it only puts in how much water you really need and it spins them so hard on regular cycle that they are practically dry when they come out. I'm able to do car mats, sleeping bags, huge spreads, anything in them.

We do 4-5+ loads every day. 7 days a week. I do have a froant loader set but I am not sure how much $ it saved us from when we switched froim a typical older machine. I know the front loader works better and faster. I used to have to dry our stuff 1.5 hours ( dryer was on the way out) and now only 40 min and its done.

HOW do you get by with only 3 loads of laundry per week? Is that ALL of the dirty clothes being washed? I have a family of four and we do at least one load per day, usually towels.

um, not sure. i think maybe 10-14 loads a week. but that's not for sure. i usually throw in whatever is on the floor in the laundry room once or twice a day, but i don't keep track of the kids' loads.

i use homemade laundry soap, for dirty stuff i use m30 to scrub it out before i wash it, sometimes i add borax to the wash when i have it.

I am lazy on the sorting part... so I do

about 3 loads for my husband and I per week
1 for each of the kids ROOM laundry basket (so thats 2)
1 for the laundry basket that is in the kids bathroom
3 for sheets and towels per week

So that's 10 per week usually.

We have a Whirlpool Duet...front loading, and I love it. My DH also purchased the pedestals so I wouldn't need to bend as much. I wash about 6 loads a week-depending on how full my sorting bins are. I sort all my laundry into those pop-up mesh bags, and when each is full enough, I wash the load. We are just the two of us.

I only use one ounce of detergent (little med cup) and my clothes are clean. It is easier on my clothes, too. I just use regular detergent, not the HE that is recommended. Too much detergent will give you problems with the machine.

For the grungie clothes, like coveralls and mechanic's grimies, I use the old washer in the garage so as not to dirty my new washer/dryer set. After all, we still have it.

The dryer is great, too. I guess I should use my clothesline, but my laundryroom is in the basement and I'm not overly excited about carrying those wet clothes up the stairs to hang them up.

I do about 4 loads every week or so. That includes linens and the dog's bedding. We try to wear things more than once, especially work-around-the-house clothes; saves wear and tear on the clothes, saves natural and financial resources.

Last week, I hung clothesline in the basement laundry room so we can save resources and money on running the dryer.

In the Summer, I hang the wash outside unless it's raining.

1 person- 4 to 5 loads every other week at the laundramat. Hate laundry and wait as long as possible to do it. 1 or 2 of those loads are pet related. Bet the laundry owner wonders where all that hair in his washers is coming from! I spend about $22.00 dollars a month on the washers and take my own soap with me.

Maybe we have smaller clothes, just kidding. first off we don't wash towels after every use and horror of all horrors we don't shower every day. All of the dirty clothes do get washed but we wait until they are dirty. I wear jeans quite a few times before washing. My work pants/dirty pants get real dirty before wash. I guess this is why my wife and I have clothes that are 20 or more years old.
