I like the looks of some of these designs. I haven't squinted at the plans too closely, though.

When I was in high school I was friends with an older woman whose husband had been a big time stock breeder in our little town. For many years they lived in one end of a huge barn. She said it was handy for doing chores in bad weather, but that she couldn't wait for him to build her a "real" house. Shortly before he died he built the house.

A funny story she'd tell. When her youngest child was about 5-6 they had gone to Mass one Sunday. After Mass the little girl ran out the church door and left it standing wide open. The priest scolded her and asked her if she'd been raised in a barn. She looked up at him with big solemn eyes and answered "yes Father, I was." It took the priest a minute or two realize that she really had been raised in a barn and then he just had to laugh. Everyone around who heard the exchange got a good laugh out of it too. And Father never asked her if she was raised in a barn again.

I lived in one for two years and loved it. The owner designed it so that all the rooms looked like buildings with half roofs and windows into the living room. He tiled the floor to lessen the chance of wood stove and fireplace fires. It had a nice little loft over the kitchen for the DD. He made a deck all the way around it which was great in the summer. It was a great place to live.
The only complaint would be the horses snorting and stomping around during the night. We kept the stalls clean so the smell wasn't that noticable.

While stationed in Germany, I met the lovely Mrs. Auric and we were wed. Our first apartment happened to be part of a multi family home and barn that was all connected. Grandma and Grandpa Braun had the first floor, as did the barn and pig stalls. Our apartment, and the apartment of the oldest son and his family was on the second floor, and the youngest son had an apartment above ours. I used to take the scraps and old leftovers downstairs to the pigs. Although the apartment was tiny, DW and I were happy (well...we were newlyweds too) and we never had any problems with bad odors originating from the first floor! Plus the bakery was right next door. Ummmmmmmmm, Mohnkuchen!
