The primary reason I installed a water filter was my sink and washing machine screen filters kept clogging up. Since doing so I haven't had to clean them. As I note, I have been alternating between the same two string cartridges for a couple of years now. Will continue to do so. Way I notice they are clogging up is water volume slows. Simple process to swap out. As noted previously I hose flush off/out some gunk then filter goes into a dedicated old sock and into a load of T-shirts.

Ken:

just wanted to give you a pat on the back for posting the comments of your critic. I think it is the prudent and reasonable thing to do, give people the information, and let them evaluate it. Not everyone would have bothered.

I think I'd take a crack at washing the string filters. We use a series of about 6 filters in our place - the course filters (string) ones being the first in line and ending up with charcoal filter for drinking water at only one tap. Filters are costing me a lot of money and the string ones are just used for larger debris before the hot water heater and kitchen. Thanks for this tip. I don't th ink the charcoal ones can be repacked with charcoal - I can't see any way to get them apart short of destroying them. And those ones are expensive - last ones ran over $60 each.
