Before you buy an N series tractor, especially a 2N or 9N you must understand what their shortcomings are.
2N and 9N tractors are 3 spd gas tractors with a fast ground speed which makes some jobs difficult or impossible. They also have the brake pedals on opposite sides of the tractor which means you need 3 legs to operate it peoperly and safely especially with equipment and on any grade. None of the N series had live hydraulics which makes most any piece of equipment that uses the PTO and hydraulics a little more of a challenge. It also means that equipment like a bush hog requires the use of an overrun clutch on the PTO output shaft or the inertia of the implement spinning will keep the tractor moving foward even with the clutch depressed, exciting to say the least. 8N's had 4 spd trans but still too fast ground speed which is why back then aftermarket companies came out with auxillary transmissions to slow them down to a useable speed at a useable RPM. It took until the 8N to get the brake pedals where they belong.

DH and FIL each have an 8N, with third one in the garage being rebuilt as we "speak." It is easy to work on, owner's and repair manuals can be purchased online, and parts are relatively inexpensive. If you want a tractor you can work on, an 8N (or 9N, for that matter) is a good starter tractor. Also, if you decide that it isn't big enough down the road, you will likely be able to get your money back out of it. I mean, it is already 50 years old, so what's to depreciate?
