I have an individual disability policy, bought years ago, with a 9 month waiting time. The wait makes it much cheaper. I'm insured for 2/3 of what I was earning at the time I purchased the policy. Currently, $93/month. I figured out once that if I work til 67, and never need it, I'll have paid out I think it was $59,ooo. for nothing. However, I decided it was worth it, b/c I was/am single. Even a 30 day waiting period makes buying disability insurance cheaper. Also, get the "same occupation" type, if possible. A friend who became disabled had dis. ins thru her former employer. The company's dr and team of lawyers actually told her that since she still had use of her voice, that she could be employed at home, in the phone sex trade! She took them to court for denying her disability, and eventually won her case, but lost $ to her lawyer. Many people chose to self-insure, but then you really have to put the money away, somewhere safe!!!
