Jenn, I use mine in electric mode and although I purchased the crank handle for manual mode I've not yet tried it out.
I'm curious - did you take the mill apart and remove some of the gear things in there? We got a booklet/pamphlet with ours that said if you didn't do that then you could still grind manually but it would be a lot more difficult as you'd be turning not only the burrs or stones but also the motor.
I'm gonna be bummed if you did disconnect the motor and it was still that much work.
